Fully Accessible

Overview

The National Gallery holds one of the finest collections of Western European paintings in the world. Over 2,300 works hang in its galleries, covering the 13th to the early 20th century. Artists include Van Gogh, Turner, Monet, and Leonardo da Vinci. The gallery sits on the north side of Trafalgar Square and offers fully step-free access to all exhibition rooms.

Getting There

Charing Cross station is the nearest stop, served by the Northern and Bakerloo lines. The station has step-free access from platform to street via lifts. Leicester Square station (Northern and Piccadilly lines) is also close but requires navigating some slopes on the pavement approach.

From Charing Cross, the walk to the gallery is short and mostly flat. Trafalgar Square itself has ramped access from all sides. Blue Badge holders can park on nearby streets, including St Martin's Place and Pall Mall East. Check Westminster Council's website for current bay locations.

Wheelchair Accessibility

The Getty Entrance on the east side of the building provides step-free access at ground level. This is the recommended entrance for wheelchair users. Inside, lifts connect all floors, including the lower ground level where the temporary exhibitions are often held.

The gallery loans manual wheelchairs free of charge. Pick one up at the Getty Entrance information desk. No advance booking is required. Powered wheelchair users will find the doorways and corridors wide enough throughout the building.

Audio guides are available and can be used with personal headphones or neck loops for hearing aid users. Large-print gallery plans are available at the information desks.

Accessible Toilets

Accessible toilets are located on the lower ground floor near the Sainsbury Wing entrance and on the main floor near Room 9. Both are well maintained and large enough for a wheelchair plus one carer. There is no Changing Places toilet at the National Gallery, but one is available at nearby St Martin-in-the-Fields church on Trafalgar Square.

Tips for Visitors with Disabilities

Friday evening openings until 9:00pm offer quieter conditions for wheelchair users who prefer fewer crowds. The Sainsbury Wing rooms (1200s to 1500s paintings) tend to be less busy than the main galleries at any time.

Seating is available in most rooms. Portable folding stools can be borrowed from the information desk if you need to rest while viewing. The gallery cafe and espresso bar both have step-free access and movable chairs.

If you plan to see a specific painting, check the gallery map on the website before your visit. Some works rotate between display and storage. Staff at the information desk can confirm locations and suggest the most accessible route between galleries.
