Fully Accessible

Overview

The Natural History Museum is fully accessible and free to enter. The building is a Victorian landmark, but extensive adaptations mean wheelchair users can reach every gallery. Lifts connect all floors, and most exhibit spaces are open and spacious. The museum has a Changing Places toilet, which is still uncommon in London's major attractions. Tactile specimens throughout the galleries let blind and low-vision visitors feel real fossils, minerals, and animal specimens.

Getting There

  • Tube: South Kensington (Piccadilly, District, Circle lines). The station has step-free access. Use the subway tunnel exit (clearly signed for the museums), which leads to a level path directly to the museum entrance. The tunnel is about a 5-minute walk.
  • Bus: Routes 14, 49, 70, 74, 345, 360, 414, and C1 stop near the museum on Cromwell Road or Exhibition Road.
  • Accessible entrance: The main entrance on Cromwell Road has a ramp alongside the front steps. The Exhibition Road entrance on the east side of the building is level and often less crowded.

Wheelchair Accessibility

  • Step-free access through the Exhibition Road entrance (east side) or via the ramp at the main Cromwell Road entrance.
  • Free wheelchair loan at the cloakroom near the main entrance. Available first come, first served.
  • Lifts reach all floors in every zone (Blue, Green, Red, and Orange). Lift locations are marked on the free map available at the entrance.
  • Hintze Hall (the main hall with the blue whale skeleton) is fully step-free with polished stone flooring.
  • The Wildlife Garden (open seasonally, April to October) has paved paths accessible to wheelchair users.

The dinosaur gallery on the ground floor is the busiest area, especially on weekends and school holidays. Arrive when the museum opens at 10:00am or visit after 3:00pm for a quieter experience.

Accessible Toilets

Standard accessible toilets are on every floor. A Changing Places toilet is located on the lower ground floor near the Red Zone. It includes a hoist, adjustable bench, and enough room for a carer. No RADAR key is needed.

Tips for Visitors with Disabilities

  • Entry is free for everyone. Some special exhibitions charge, but many offer free companion tickets for disabled visitors.
  • Tactile and handling specimens are available in several galleries. Ask staff about the current hands-on exhibits.
  • Sensory maps and Visual Stories can be downloaded from the museum website before your visit. These are helpful for visitors with autism or sensory processing differences.
  • The restaurant and cafe on the ground floor have step-free access and space for wheelchairs between tables.
  • The museum connects to the Science Museum and V&A Museum via Exhibition Road, which is a flat, wide, shared-surface street. You can visit two or three museums in one trip without any steps.
