Partially Accessible

Overview

St Paul's Cathedral, designed by Sir Christopher Wren, is one of London's most recognized landmarks. The cathedral floor level is fully step-free and offers an impressive experience on its own, with the nave, quire, and crypt all accessible. However, the famous Whispering Gallery, Stone Gallery, and Golden Gallery sit at the top of the dome and require climbing 528 steps. There is no lift to any gallery level. Wheelchair users can still appreciate the dome from below, where the scale and detail are striking.

Getting There

  • Tube: St Paul's station (Central line) is the closest but does not have step-free access. Wheelchair users should use an alternative station.
  • Tube: Mansion House (District, Circle lines) is a 5-minute wheel away but also lacks step-free access.
  • Step-free alternative: Bank station (Northern line, Waterloo & City line) has step-free access via the Cannon Street exit. The cathedral is about a 10-minute wheel from there.
  • Bus: Routes 4, 11, 15, 23, 25, 26, and 76 stop near the cathedral. All buses have ramps. The stop on Cannon Street or Newgate Street puts you closest to the entrance.
  • Accessible entrance: The main entrance on the west front has a ramp.

Wheelchair Accessibility

  • The entire cathedral floor is step-free. This includes the nave, the quire (choir area), and the area beneath the dome.
  • The crypt is accessible via a lift near the south transept. The crypt contains the tombs of Wellington and Nelson, a cafe, and the gift shop.
  • The Whispering Gallery (259 steps), Stone Gallery (378 steps), and Golden Gallery (528 steps) have no lift access. These are narrow spiral staircases only.
  • Floor surfaces are smooth stone throughout. The space is wide and easy to navigate in a wheelchair.
  • Guided tours are available and guides can adjust the route based on accessibility needs.

The nearest step-free Tube station is Bank, not St Paul's. Plan your journey using the TfL accessibility map or the TfL Go app, which shows real-time lift status at stations.

Accessible Toilets

Accessible toilets are located in the crypt, near the cafe area. They have grab rails, an emergency cord, and room to maneuver. Take the lift from the south transept to reach the crypt level. There is no Changing Places toilet on site.

Tips for Visitors with Disabilities

  • Book tickets online for a discount. Disability card holders (Access Card, Blue Badge, or equivalent) get a reduced rate. Ask at the ticket desk for details on companion pricing.
  • The multimedia guide includes audio description of the galleries and dome so you can learn about areas you cannot physically reach.
  • Weekday mornings are the quietest times to visit, especially Tuesday and Wednesday.
  • The crypt cafe is a good spot for a break. It has step-free access, accessible seating, and reasonable prices for central London.
  • Evensong services (Mon-Sat at 5pm) are free to attend and offer a chance to hear the choir in the quire. Wheelchair spaces are available near the front.
  • Photography is allowed inside the cathedral.
