Overview
Tate Modern is one of the best galleries in London for wheelchair users. The converted power station has vast, open spaces that are easy to navigate. Entry to the permanent collection is free. The Blavatnik Building (Switch House) extension was designed with accessibility as a priority, with wide corridors and lifts throughout. Level access is available from the river entrance, and free wheelchairs can be borrowed at the front desk.
Getting There
- Tube: Southwark station (Jubilee line) is the closest with step-free access, about a 10-minute roll along flat paths. Blackfriars (District, Circle lines) is also step-free and a similar distance.
- Bus: Routes 45, 63, 100, and 381 stop on Blackfriars Road, a short distance from the gallery.
- Accessible entrance: The river entrance on the north side of the building (facing the Thames) has level access. This is the best entrance for wheelchair users. The main west entrance on Holland Street also has level access.
Wheelchair Accessibility
- Level access through the river entrance on the north side. No steps or ramps needed.
- Free wheelchair loan at the information desk on Level 0. First come, first served.
- Lifts connect all floors in both the Boiler House (original building) and the Blavatnik Building. Lift buttons have Braille labels.
- The Turbine Hall on Level 0 is a massive open space, perfect for wheelchair users. Gallery rooms on upper floors are also wide and well spaced.
- The viewing terrace on Level 10 of the Blavatnik Building is accessible by lift and offers panoramic views of London.
Friday and Saturday evenings (open until 10:00pm) are a great time to visit with fewer crowds. The Turbine Hall installations change regularly and are always free to visit.
Accessible Toilets
Accessible toilets are on every level of both buildings. A Changing Places toilet is available on Level 0 of the Blavatnik Building, with a hoist, height-adjustable changing bench, and enough space for a carer to assist.
Tips for Visitors with Disabilities
- Free entry to all permanent displays. For paid exhibitions, one companion enters free with an Access Card or proof of disability.
- Visual Stories (social narratives) are available on the website to help visitors with autism or learning disabilities prepare for their visit.
- Large-print guides and audio description tours can be requested at the information desk.
- The cafe on Level 1 and the restaurant on Level 6 both have step-free access and tables with clearance for wheelchairs.
- The Millennium Bridge connecting Tate Modern to St Paul's Cathedral is step-free but can be slippery in wet weather. Use caution.
