National Museums Are Free

Most major national museums in London are free for everyone, regardless of disability status. This includes the British Museum, Natural History Museum, Science Museum, Tate Modern, Tate Britain, National Gallery, Victoria and Albert Museum, and the Imperial War Museum. No ticket or proof of disability is needed.

These museums also offer free entry for carers and companions at any special paid exhibitions. Ask at the ticket desk with your proof of disability.

Access Card

The Access Card is a UK-wide scheme that gives disabled people a simple, recognizable card to prove their access needs. It is accepted at hundreds of venues, festivals, theatres, and attractions across the UK. The card shows symbols indicating your specific requirements, such as needing a companion, a wheelchair space, or extra time.

  • Cost: 15 GBP for 3 years.
  • How to apply: Online through the Access Card website (accesscard.org.uk). You will need proof of disability such as a PIP award letter, DLA letter, or registration of visual impairment.
  • What it gets you: Free companion tickets, priority entry, and disability concessions at participating venues.

European Disability Card

The European Disability Card (EDC) is recognized at a growing number of London venues. If you hold one from an EU member state, bring it with you. Many attractions accept it as proof of disability for concession pricing and companion tickets, though it is not universally accepted across the UK.

Disabled Persons Railcard

The Disabled Persons Railcard gives you one-third off most rail fares across the UK, including trains to and from London airports.

  • Cost: 20 GBP per year.
  • Companion discount: One person traveling with you also gets one-third off.
  • How to buy: Online at disabledpersons-railcard.co.uk, at staffed National Rail ticket offices, or by post. You need proof of a qualifying disability.
  • Accepted proof: PIP or DLA award letter, registered blind or partially sighted certificate, war pension mobility supplement letter, or equivalent documentation from your home country.

The railcard is valid on all National Rail services. It does not apply to London Underground, buses, or Docklands Light Railway fares.

Freedom Pass

The Freedom Pass provides free travel on all London buses, the Tube, DLR, London Overground, and most National Rail services within London. However, it is only available to London residents with a qualifying disability. Visitors cannot apply for a Freedom Pass.

Free Companion Tickets

Many London theatres, concert venues, and attractions offer a free ticket for a personal assistant or companion when a disabled person buys a ticket. This is standard practice at:

  • Most West End theatres (contact the box office accessibility line)
  • The Royal Albert Hall
  • O2 Arena
  • Barbican Centre
  • Southbank Centre
  • Most cinemas (through the CEA Card scheme, which costs 6 GBP per year)
