Mostly Accessible

Overview

The Almudena Cathedral (Catedral de la Almudena) is Madrid's main cathedral, situated directly opposite the Royal Palace on Calle de Bailén. Though its construction began in 1883, the cathedral was not completed and consecrated until 1993, making it one of the newest cathedrals in Europe. The interior is notably modern despite the traditional exterior, featuring bright stained glass and a painted ceiling in contemporary style. The main nave is accessible via a wide ramp on the side of the building. However, the underground crypt and the rooftop observation deck (mirador) are reached only by stairs, so wheelchair users cannot access those areas.

Getting There

  • Metro: Opera station (Lines 2, 5) is the nearest stop, about a 5-minute roll away. The station has elevator access. Exit and head west along Calle de Bailén.
  • Bus: Lines 3, 25, 39, and 148 stop near the cathedral along Calle de Bailén or Calle Mayor.
  • On foot from the Royal Palace: The cathedral is directly across the street from the Royal Palace's main entrance on Plaza de la Armeria. The route is flat and paved.
  • On foot from Plaza Mayor: Head west along Calle Mayor for about 10 minutes. The route is gently downhill and paved.

Wheelchair Accessibility

  • The main accessible entrance is via a wide ramp on the Calle de Bailén side of the building. This ramp has no handrails but is broad enough for wheelchairs and scooters.
  • The main front entrance has steps and is not wheelchair accessible.
  • Once inside the main nave, the floor is flat and spacious with wide aisles between the pews, allowing easy wheelchair movement.
  • The Cathedral Museum has elevator access, making its exhibition rooms accessible.
  • The crypt (Cripta de la Almudena), located below the cathedral, is accessed only by stairs. There is no elevator or ramp to the crypt level. Wheelchair users cannot visit this area.
  • The rooftop observation deck requires climbing approximately 200 stairs. There is no elevator. This area is not accessible.
  • Some exterior surfaces around the cathedral, particularly on the south side near the crypt entrance, are uneven cobblestones. Take care when approaching from this direction.

The crypt and the rooftop observation deck are not accessible for wheelchair users. Both require stairs with no alternative elevator or ramp access. The main nave and Cathedral Museum are the accessible areas.

Accessible Toilets

  • There are no public accessible toilets inside the cathedral itself.
  • The nearest accessible public toilets are in the Royal Palace visitor facilities across the street.
  • Several cafes on Calle Mayor (a 5-minute roll east) have accessible toilet facilities. Ask before entering, as not all are accessible.

Tips for Visitors with Disabilities

  • Entry to the cathedral and crypt is free, though a small donation is suggested.
  • The observation deck costs 6 EUR but is not wheelchair accessible, so do not purchase this ticket if you use a wheelchair.
  • The cathedral is an active place of worship. Masses are held daily, and the church may be partially or fully closed to tourists during services. Check the schedule on the website before visiting.
  • Photography without flash is permitted inside the main nave.
  • The modern interior is worth seeing for its colorful stained glass and the painted ceiling by Kiko Arguello, which covers the apse in a contemporary style.
  • The Plaza de la Almudena in front of the cathedral is flat and offers good views of both the cathedral facade and the Royal Palace.
  • For the best experience, combine your cathedral visit with the Royal Palace directly across the street. Both are accessible and together make a half-day outing.
  • The surrounding area has some steep streets. Calle de Bailén itself is relatively flat, but streets descending toward the Manzanares River to the west can be quite steep.
  • Guided tours are occasionally available. Contact the cathedral in advance to ask about accessibility for group tours.
  • The nearest metro station (Opera) is well-maintained with working elevators, making it a reliable accessible transit point.
