Fully Accessible

Overview

Puerta del Sol is Madrid's central square and the symbolic heart of Spain. It is home to the Km 0 marker, the point from which all radial roads in Spain are measured, and the famous Bear and Strawberry Tree statue (El Oso y el Madrono), the symbol of Madrid. Following a major renovation completed in 2025, the square is now fully pedestrianized with a new central glass pavilion, an oval fountain, and the equestrian statue of King Carlos III as the centerpiece. The square earns a "Fully Accessible" rating because the entire surface is flat, smooth, and free of vehicle traffic. Three Metro lines converge here, all with elevator access.

Getting There

  • Metro: Sol station is served by Lines 1, 2, and 3. The station has been renovated with new, accessible entrances and elevators connecting platforms to street level.
  • Cercanias (commuter rail): Sol-Cercanias station provides step-free connections to the suburban rail network.
  • Bus: Numerous bus lines stop around the perimeter of the square, including lines 3, 5, 15, 20, 51, 52, and 53. All Madrid city buses are low-floor with boarding ramps.
  • Approach: The entire square and connecting pedestrian streets (Calle de Arenal, Calle Mayor, Calle del Carmen, Calle de Preciados) are flat and step-free.

Wheelchair Accessibility

  • The entire square is a single-level pedestrian zone with smooth stone pavers. There are no curbs, steps, or vehicle traffic to navigate.
  • The Km 0 plaque is embedded in the pavement on the south side of the square, in front of the former Royal Post Office building (now the regional government headquarters). It is at ground level and fully accessible.
  • The Bear and Strawberry Tree statue is on the east side of the square. It sits on a raised pedestal at ground level with clear access from all directions.
  • The new glass pavilion in the center of the square is a step-free structure.
  • Benches and seating areas are distributed around the square. Some have armrests for easier transfers.
  • The surface is smooth and well-drained, with no significant gaps or uneven joints between pavers.

Puerta del Sol's recent renovation created one of Madrid's most wheelchair-friendly public spaces. The fully flat, car-free design makes it an ideal starting point for exploring the historic center.

Accessible Toilets

There are no permanent public toilets on Puerta del Sol. The nearest accessible options are:

  • Mercado de San Miguel (about 300 meters west via Calle Mayor), with accessible toilets
  • Department stores on Calle de Preciados (about 200 meters north), including El Corte Ingles, which has accessible customer toilets on multiple floors
  • Cafes and restaurants around the square (ask staff about accessibility before entering)

Tips for Visitors with Disabilities

  • Puerta del Sol is Madrid's busiest square. For a calmer experience, visit early morning (before 9:00am) or late evening.
  • New Year's Eve is celebrated here with the famous grape-eating tradition at midnight. The square fills to capacity and is not recommended for wheelchair users on this night.
  • The square connects directly to Gran Via (north via Calle de Alcala or Calle de la Montera), Plaza Mayor (west via Calle Mayor), and Retiro Park (east along Calle de Alcala). All routes are on flat, pedestrianized or wide-sidewalk streets.
  • Several accessible ATMs are located around the square, including at banks along the south and west sides.
  • The Real Casa de Correos (the clock tower building on the south side) is the seat of the Madrid regional government. The ground floor is occasionally open for exhibitions and is accessible.
  • Street performers and crowds can block paths, especially on weekend afternoons. Navigate around the edges of the square if the center is crowded.
  • The Sol-Alcala pedestrian axis connects Puerta del Sol to Calle de Alcala, providing a long, flat, vehicle-free route ideal for wheelchair users.
