Overview
The Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia is Spain's national museum of 20th-century and contemporary art. Its most famous work is Picasso's Guernica (1937), one of the most powerful anti-war paintings ever created. The museum occupies two connected buildings: the historic Sabatini Building (a former hospital) and the modern Jean Nouvel addition. The Reina Sofia earns a "Fully Accessible" rating because nearly all public areas are wheelchair accessible, with glass exterior elevators, ramps throughout, and a strong commitment to universal design. Only two small spaces (the Protocol Room in the Sabatini Building and the Bovedas Room) lack wheelchair access.
Getting There
- Metro: Atocha station (Line 1) is the closest stop, about 200 meters from the Nouvel building entrance. The station has elevator access.
- Cercanias (commuter rail): Atocha-Cercanias station is adjacent to the museum, with step-free access to the platform.
- Bus: Lines 6, 10, 14, 19, 26, 27, 32, 34, 36, 37, 41, 59, and C1 stop nearby. All Madrid city buses have low floors and boarding ramps.
- Approach: The Nouvel building entrance on Plaza del Emperador Carlos V is recommended for wheelchair users because it has a flatter ramp than the Sabatini entrance.
Wheelchair Accessibility
- The Nouvel building entrance features a gentle ramp leading to the ground floor. The Sabatini Building entrance on Calle de Santa Isabel is also accessible.
- Glass exterior elevators on the Sabatini Building are a landmark feature and connect all exhibition floors. The Nouvel building also has internal elevators.
- Nearly all public galleries, corridors, and exhibition spaces are step-free and wide enough for power wheelchairs.
- Guernica is displayed on Floor 2 of the Sabatini Building. The gallery is spacious and fully accessible by elevator.
- Free wheelchair loan is available at the Visitor Information Desk. No advance reservation is needed.
- Two areas are not wheelchair accessible: the Protocol Room in the Sabatini Building and the Bovedas Room.
Disabled visitors with recognized disability documentation receive free admission. One essential companion also enters free. Show your documentation at the box office.
