Mostly Accessible

Overview

Retiro Park (Parque de El Retiro) is Madrid's most famous green space, covering 125 hectares in the heart of the city. It was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2021 as part of the "Landscape of Light" designation along with the Paseo del Prado. The park features a large boating lake, the Crystal Palace (Palacio de Cristal), the Velazquez Palace, rose gardens, fountains, and tree-lined promenades. Retiro earns a "Mostly Accessible" rating because the main avenues are flat and paved, two adapted rowing boats are available, and the Crystal Palace and Velazquez Palace are accessible. Some secondary paths are gravel or uneven, which can be difficult for wheelchair users.

Getting There

  • Metro: Retiro station (Line 2) is the closest stop for the northern entrance. Ibiza station (Line 9) serves the eastern side. Both stations have elevator access.
  • Bus: Lines 1, 2, 9, 15, 19, 20, 26, 28, 51, 52, 63, and 146 stop at various points around the park perimeter. All Madrid city buses have low floors with boarding ramps.
  • Recommended entrance: The Felipe IV entrance (on Calle Alfonso XII, near the Prado Museum) is flat and leads directly to the main avenues. The Puerta de la Independencia entrance on Plaza de la Independencia is also flat and accessible.

Wheelchair Accessibility

  • Major avenues and promenades are wide, flat, and paved with smooth asphalt or compacted stone. These routes connect the main attractions within the park.
  • Secondary paths and some garden areas use loose gravel, which can be difficult for manual wheelchairs. Stick to the paved main paths for the smoothest ride.
  • The Crystal Palace (Palacio de Cristal) is on a level surface and wheelchair accessible. It hosts rotating exhibitions organized by the Reina Sofia Museum. The entrance is step-free.
  • The Velazquez Palace (Palacio de Velazquez) is also wheelchair accessible and hosts Reina Sofia exhibitions. It features a flat entrance.
  • The boating lake (Estanque Grande) has 2 adapted rowing boats with wheelchair space, safety belts, and anchors for stability. Access is through a gate at the back of the boat. The pier is also adapted for wheelchair users.
  • The solar-powered boat ride on the lake is wheelchair accessible.

The adapted rowing boats are popular. Arrive early on weekends or visit on weekday mornings to avoid long waits. Ask staff at the boat rental kiosk for the accessible boats specifically.

Accessible Toilets

Public accessible toilets are located near the boating lake area and near the Rosaleda (Rose Garden). They have grab rails and space for wheelchair access. Facilities near the main paths tend to be better maintained. Additional accessible toilets are available inside the Crystal Palace during exhibition hours.

Tips for Visitors with Disabilities

  • The park is large. Focus on the central area (lake, Crystal Palace, Velazquez Palace, Rose Garden) for a manageable visit of 1 to 2 hours.
  • Benches with back support are plentiful along the main avenues, good for resting.
  • Shade is abundant on the tree-lined avenues, helpful during Madrid's hot summers. Bring water and sun protection from May through September.
  • Electric mobility scooters can be rented through Accessible Madrid (accessiblemadrid.com) for exploring the park.
  • The Fallen Angel statue (Fuente del Angel Caido) is reachable via paved paths and is located at a crossroads of the main avenues.
  • Avoid the hillier southwestern section of the park if you want to stay on flat ground. The central and northern areas are the most level.
  • The park closes at different times depending on the season. Check current closing times, especially in winter when gates close at 10:00pm.
