Overview

The Royal Botanical Garden (Real Jardin Botanico) is an 8-hectare garden located next to the Prado Museum in central Madrid. Founded in 1755 and moved to its current location in 1781, the garden holds over 5,000 species of living plants arranged across three terraced levels. The main paths are paved and the terraces are connected by ramps, though some ramps are steep and several secondary paths use loose gravel. Wheelchairs are available for loan at the entrance. The garden is a calm, green space that provides a welcome break from Madrid's busy streets.

Getting There

  • Metro: Atocha station (Line 1) is the closest stop, about a 5-minute roll away. The station has elevator access. Exit and head north along Paseo del Prado to Plaza de Murillo.
  • Cercanias (commuter rail): Atocha Renfe station connects to commuter rail lines. The station is fully accessible with elevators.
  • Bus: Lines 10, 14, 19, 24, 26, 27, 32, 34, and 45 stop nearby along Paseo del Prado.
  • On foot from the Prado Museum: The garden entrance at Plaza de Murillo is directly adjacent to the Prado's south entrance. The walk is flat and paved.

Wheelchair Accessibility

  • The main entrance on Plaza de Murillo is step-free and accessible.
  • Wheelchairs are available for loan at the entrance free of charge. Request one at the ticket desk.
  • The garden is arranged on three terraced levels. Ramps connect all three levels, but some ramps have a noticeable gradient that may require assistance for manual wheelchair users.
  • Main paths on each level are paved with smooth stone or compacted surfaces and are wide enough for wheelchairs.
  • Secondary paths, especially in the botanical collections areas, use loose gravel that can be difficult for wheelchair wheels. Stick to the main paved routes for the easiest experience.
  • The greenhouses are accessible at ground level with wide doorways.
  • Benches are placed at regular intervals along the main paths.
  • The garden is generally flat within each terrace level. The slopes occur only at the ramp transitions between terraces.

Start your visit at the lowest terrace (nearest the entrance) and work your way up. The ramps are easier to manage going uphill when you are fresh. On the return, going downhill requires less effort. Free Tuesday morning admission (10:00am-1:00pm) is a great time to visit with fewer crowds.

Accessible Toilets

  • Accessible toilets are located near the main entrance building.
  • They include grab bars and sufficient space for wheelchair maneuvering.
  • Additional toilet facilities are available inside the exhibition building, though accessibility varies.

Tips for Visitors with Disabilities

  • Admission is 4 EUR for adults. Free entry on Tuesdays from 10:00am to 1:00pm, and always free for seniors 65+ and children under 10.
  • The garden closes earlier in winter (6:00pm) and later in summer (9:00pm). Check the current schedule on the website before visiting.
  • Bring sun protection in summer. While the garden has shaded areas under mature trees, several paths cross open sunny sections with no cover.
  • Water fountains are available at several points within the garden.
  • The garden is rarely as crowded as nearby museums, making it a comfortable experience for wheelchair users even on weekends.
  • The gift shop near the entrance is accessible and sells botanical books, seeds, and souvenirs.
  • Combine your visit with the Prado Museum next door or the Reina Sofia (about a 10-minute roll south), both of which are on the Paseo del Prado and have full wheelchair accessibility.
  • After rain, some gravel paths may be muddy or soft. Stay on paved routes for the safest experience.
  • The garden occasionally hosts temporary exhibitions and events. Check the website for the current program.
  • Dogs are not permitted in the garden (service animals excepted).
  • Photography is allowed throughout the garden for personal use.
