Mostly Accessible

Overview

The Royal Palace of Madrid (Palacio Real) is the official residence of the Spanish Royal Family, though it is used only for state ceremonies today. With 3,418 rooms, it is one of the largest functioning royal palaces in Europe. Visitors can tour the state rooms, the Royal Armoury, and the Royal Pharmacy. The palace earns a "Mostly Accessible" rating because the main exhibition floors are reachable by elevator, ramps and adapted itineraries are in place, and wheelchairs are available on loan. Some areas with historic flooring or narrow passages may present challenges for power wheelchair users.

Getting There

  • Metro: Opera station (Lines 2 and 5) is the closest stop, roughly 300 meters from the palace entrance. The station has elevator access.
  • Bus: Lines 3, 25, 39, and 148 stop nearby. Madrid city buses are low-floor with ramps.
  • Approach: From Opera station, head west along Calle de Arenal toward Plaza de Isabel II, then continue to the palace plaza. The route is flat with smooth sidewalks and dropped curbs.

Wheelchair Accessibility

  • The accessible entrance is on the Calle de Bailen side. Look for signs directing visitors with reduced mobility. Staff are available to assist.
  • Ramps and elevators connect the main exhibition floors. Adapted itineraries have been set up specifically for wheelchair users and visitors with reduced mobility.
  • The State Rooms feature polished stone and marble floors. These are smooth but can be slippery when wet. Power wheelchairs and manual chairs both fit through the doorways on the accessible route.
  • The Royal Armoury is accessible by elevator from the main courtyard.
  • Free wheelchair loan is available at the entrance. Request one at the ticket counter or information desk.
  • The Royal Pharmacy, located across the courtyard, is accessible at ground level.

Visitors with a recognized disability of 33% or more receive free admission. One companion also enters free if accompaniment is indicated on the disability documentation. Collect your free ticket at the dedicated side entrance for priority access.

Accessible Toilets

Accessible toilets are located inside the palace near the main visitor areas. They are equipped with grab rails, emergency cords, and adequate turning space for wheelchairs. Ask staff at the entrance for directions to the nearest accessible facility.

Tips for Visitors with Disabilities

  • Visit early in the morning (10:00am) or during the last hour before closing to avoid crowds. Weekday mornings are quieter than weekends.
  • Download the Royal Palace of Madrid app before your visit. It includes audiovisual content, audio descriptions, and two virtual tours of the palace, available in 16 languages.
  • The palace courtyard (Plaza de la Armeria) is large and paved with smooth stone. It offers good views of the Almudena Cathedral directly opposite.
  • Free entry periods for EU citizens run Mon-Thu from 5:00-7:00pm in summer and 4:00-6:00pm in winter. These times are busy, so arrive early in the window.
  • The Sabatini Gardens and Campo del Moro gardens behind the palace are free to enter and have paved main paths, though some secondary paths are gravel.
  • Allow 90 minutes to 2 hours for a full visit. The adapted route covers the main highlights without requiring stairs.
