The Situation in Madrid
Finding accessible toilets in Madrid requires some planning. The city has public toilet cabins (aseos publicos automaticos) in central areas that are wheelchair accessible, and major museums and shopping centers have good facilities. However, traditional tapas bars and older restaurants frequently have toilets in basements accessed only by stairs. Metro stations generally do not have public toilets.
Plan Ahead
Use accessible toilets at every museum, shopping center, or major attraction you visit. Do not wait until it is urgent. Traditional tapas bars and older restaurants almost always have their toilets in the basement, accessed only by stairs.
Public Toilet Cabins
Madrid has self-cleaning public toilet cabins (aseos publicos automaticos) installed on streets in the city center. These are grey cylindrical or rectangular units on sidewalks.
- Accessible: Most cabins are wheelchair accessible with automatic sliding doors wide enough for a wheelchair (approximately 85 cm), grab rails, and enough turning space inside.
- Cost: A small fee of approximately 0.10 euros per use.
- Available 24 hours: The cabins operate around the clock and are self-cleaning after each use.
- Locations: You can find them in central areas including near Puerta del Sol, along Gran Via, near Plaza Mayor, and in other high-traffic tourist zones.
Availability Can Vary
Public toilet cabins are sometimes out of service due to maintenance or vandalism. Do not rely on a single cabin being available. Always have a backup plan, such as a nearby shopping center or museum.
The Euro Key System
Spain does not widely use the Euro Key (Euroschluessel) toilet locking system. The Euro Key is primarily used in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, the Czech Republic, and a few other central European countries. If you have a Euro Key from another European country, it will not be useful in Madrid.
Accessible toilets in Madrid are generally either freely accessible (in shopping centers and museums) or require a small coin payment (public cabins).
Museum Toilets
Madrid's major museums are reliable places to find well-maintained accessible toilets. These are available to visitors with museum tickets.
| Museum | Accessible Toilet | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Museo del Prado | Yes | Accessible restrooms on the ground floor. The museum is fully step-free with elevators to all levels. |
| Museo Reina Sofia | Yes | Accessible toilets available. The Nouvel building extension is fully accessible. The Sabatini building has elevators. |
| Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza | Yes | Accessible restrooms on the ground floor. Step-free access throughout via elevators. |
| Palacio Real (Royal Palace) | Yes | Accessible toilet facilities available for visitors. Enter through the accessible entrance on the south side. |
| CaixaForum Madrid | Yes | Modern building with accessible facilities on multiple floors. Elevator access throughout. |
Shopping Centers and Department Stores
Large shopping centers and department stores in Madrid have accessible toilets open to customers. These are among the most reliable options in the city.
- El Corte Ingles - Spain's largest department store chain has multiple locations across Madrid, including on Gran Via, Calle de Preciados (near Sol), and Paseo de la Castellana. All locations have accessible restrooms, typically on the ground or lower floors. You can use the toilets without making a purchase.
- Centro Comercial Xanadu (Arroyomolinos, outside central Madrid) - Large modern shopping center with accessible facilities.
- Centro Comercial La Vaguada (Barrio del Pilar) - Accessible restrooms throughout.
- Centro Comercial Principe Pio (near Principe Pio station) - Modern shopping center built in a renovated train station with accessible facilities.
- Mercado de San Miguel - The famous food market near Plaza Mayor has accessible toilet facilities.
El Corte Ingles Is Your Best Friend
El Corte Ingles department stores are found all over central Madrid. They always have accessible restrooms that are well maintained. You do not need to buy anything. Look for the green triangle logo. The Preciados store near Sol and the Callao store on Gran Via are the most centrally located.
Metro Station Toilets
Most Madrid Metro stations do not have public toilets. Unlike some other European metro systems, Metro de Madrid has not installed restroom facilities at the majority of its stations. When using the Metro, plan your toilet stops around your above-ground destinations.
A few major interchange stations and transit hubs have nearby facilities:
- Atocha Renfe - The mainline train station (not the Metro station itself) has accessible restrooms.
- Chamartin - The northern train station has accessible facilities.
- Principe Pio - The adjacent shopping center has accessible restrooms.
Restaurant and Bar Toilets
Many traditional tapas bars in Madrid are in old buildings where the toilet is down a narrow staircase to the basement. This is an extremely common situation, especially in the historic center around La Latina, Sol, and Huertas.
When choosing a restaurant or tapas bar, call ahead and ask specifically about their toilet situation. Look for:
- Newer restaurants in modern buildings, which are more likely to have accessible ground-floor toilets.
- Hotel restaurants that share the hotel's accessible infrastructure.
- Restaurants with terrazas (terraces) in newer buildings, as these often have ground-floor access.
- Large chain restaurants in commercial buildings, which must meet current building codes.
See our Accessible Restaurants guide for specific recommendations.
