European Disability Card

The European Disability Card (EDC) is being introduced across EU member states. Spain was not among the initial pilot countries, and full implementation is underway with a deadline of 2028. However, many Madrid attractions already accept disability documentation from other EU countries.

If you do not have the European Disability Card, bring whatever official proof of disability you have from your home country: a national disability card, benefit letter, pension document, or a signed letter from your doctor. Most Madrid venues accept any official documentation that shows your disability status.

What Counts as Proof

Accepted forms of proof vary by venue, but most accept: the European Disability Card (if available), a national disability card or certificate, the Spanish certificado de discapacidad (if you have one), a disability pension or benefit letter, or a signed letter from your doctor. If your documents are not in English or Spanish, consider bringing a translated copy.

National Museum Free Admission

One of the best benefits for disabled visitors in Madrid is that most national museums offer free admission for people with disabilities. This is one of the most generous museum access policies in Europe.

Public Transport Discounts

Abono Transporte (Travel Pass)

The Abono Transporte is Madrid's public transport pass covering Metro, EMT buses, Cercanias trains, and light rail within your chosen zones. For residents with disabilities, significant discounts are available. However, tourist visitors generally cannot access the discounted Abono.

For short-term visitors, the best option is the Tourist Travel Pass (Abono Turistico), which offers unlimited travel for 1 to 7 days. This pass does not currently have a specific disability discount, but it covers all transport modes.

Accessible Taxis (Eurotaxi)

Madrid has a fleet of wheelchair-accessible taxis (Eurotaxis) with ramps or lifts. These charge the same fare as standard taxis - there is no extra charge for using an accessible vehicle. Book through:

  • Radio Taxi Madrid: +34 915 478 200
  • Tele Taxi: +34 913 712 131
  • Cabify app: Select the accessible vehicle option when booking.

Companion Travel

On Metro de Madrid and EMT buses, companions of wheelchair users do not travel free automatically. Both passengers need valid tickets or travel passes. Check with specific transport operators for any companion discount programs that may apply.

Parking

If you have a European disability parking card (tarjeta europea de estacionamiento para personas con discapacidad), you can park in designated disabled parking spaces (plazas reservadas) throughout Madrid. Display the card visibly on your dashboard.

  • Madrid's SER (Servicio de Estacionamiento Regulado) regulated parking zones offer exemptions for vehicles displaying a disability parking card.
  • Designated disabled parking spaces are marked with the international wheelchair symbol and blue paint.
  • Underground parking garages at major attractions and shopping centers have reserved disabled spaces near elevators.

Other Discounts

  • Retiro Park boat rental: The lake in Retiro Park offers reduced rates for visitors with disabilities.
  • Teatro Real (Royal Theater): Offers reduced ticket prices and accessible seating for visitors with disabilities. Contact their accessibility service when booking.
  • Estadio Santiago Bernabeu (Real Madrid stadium tour): Accessible tour route with reduced admission for visitors with disabilities.
  • Theme parks: Parque Warner Madrid and Parque de Atracciones offer disability discounts and companion tickets. Check their websites for current policies.

Tips for Getting Your Discount

  • Always carry your proof of disability. Have your card or documentation ready at each venue.
  • Book online when possible. Some museums allow you to book disability-discount tickets online.
  • Use the accessible entrance. Major museums have a separate accessible entrance where staff are used to processing disability tickets.
  • Ask about priority entry. Wheelchair users often qualify for priority access, which means shorter wait times at busy attractions like the Prado and Reina Sofia.
