Why Connectivity Matters

Reliable mobile data is especially important for wheelchair users in Madrid. You will need it for navigation apps (Google Maps, Apple Maps) to find accessible routes, real-time public transport information (Metro de Madrid app, EMT app), checking elevator status at Metro stations, ride-hailing services (Uber, Cabify, Bolt), and translating signs or menus with your phone camera.

Spanish Mobile Networks

Spain has three major mobile network operators, all with strong coverage in Madrid and across the country:

  • Movistar (Telefonica) - The largest Spanish network. Best overall coverage nationwide, including rural areas. Strong 5G rollout in Madrid.
  • Vodafone Spain - Strong urban coverage and competitive pricing. Good data speeds in Madrid.
  • Orange Spain - Solid coverage and good value prepaid plans. Strong presence in Madrid.

All three networks offer 4G and 5G coverage throughout Madrid. For tourist stays, any of these networks will work well in the city.

Prepaid SIM Cards

Prepaid SIM cards are available without a contract and work in any unlocked phone. You will need your passport or ID for registration (Spanish law requires SIM card registration).

Where to Buy

  • Madrid-Barajas Airport (MAD) - Phone shops and kiosks in the arrivals area of terminals T1 and T4 sell prepaid SIM cards. You can buy one immediately after clearing customs.
  • City center stores - Each network has branded shops in central Madrid. Movistar, Vodafone, and Orange stores are found on Gran Via, Calle de Preciados, and throughout the city center.
  • Electronics stores - MediaMarkt (locations at Xanadu, Plenilunio, and other shopping centers) sells prepaid SIM cards from all major networks.
  • Supermarkets and convenience stores - Carrefour, Mercadona, and other supermarkets sell prepaid SIM cards. Digi (a budget operator using the Movistar network) offers very competitive rates.
  • Tobacco shops (estancos) - Some estancos sell prepaid SIM cards.

If your phone supports eSIM (most phones from 2020 onward), you can set up a Spanish data plan before you leave home. No physical SIM card needed. Just scan a QR code and activate.
