Overview
Madrid has a large taxi fleet of over 15,000 vehicles. Standard Madrid taxis are white with a red diagonal stripe on the front door. Within this fleet, about 500 vehicles are Eurotaxis - wheelchair-accessible taxis equipped with rear ramps that allow you to board without leaving your wheelchair. Eurotaxis charge the same metered fare as standard taxis. There is no surcharge for the accessible vehicle.
Eurotaxi (Wheelchair-Accessible Taxis)
Eurotaxis are the best on-demand transport option for wheelchair users in Madrid. These are purpose-built or converted vehicles with:
- A rear ramp for wheelchair boarding.
- Interior wheelchair securing systems (straps and clamps).
- Enough interior height for a seated wheelchair user (approximately 140 centimeters).
- Space for a companion to sit next to the wheelchair user.
You stay in your wheelchair during the entire ride. The driver secures the wheelchair with the built-in restraint system.
How to Book a Eurotaxi
By phone: Call the main taxi dispatch number, 915 478 200 (Radio Taxi Madrid), and request a Eurotaxi. You can also call 913 712 131 (Tele Taxi). Specify that you need a vehicle adapted for a wheelchair user (vehiculo adaptado or Eurotaxi).
FREE NOW app (formerly MyTaxi): The FREE NOW app allows you to book a taxi in Madrid. Select the "Accessible" or "Eurotaxi" vehicle category when booking. Availability depends on how many Eurotaxis are operating in your area.
At taxi stands: You cannot typically find a Eurotaxi waiting at a taxi stand. They must be requested by phone or app. However, at the airport and major train stations, Eurotaxis are sometimes available at the accessible taxi stand.
Booking Ahead
Eurotaxis are limited in number (about 500 across the city). For airport transfers, train station pickups, or scheduled outings, book at least 30 minutes to 1 hour in advance. During rush hours, availability can be tight. For early morning or late night trips, call the evening before to confirm.
Standard Madrid Taxis
Standard taxis are sedans and cannot transport an occupied wheelchair. They work for wheelchair users who can transfer to the car seat. The driver should help fold and load a manual wheelchair into the trunk. Most taxis have enough trunk space for a standard manual wheelchair.
Power wheelchairs and large mobility scooters will not fit in a standard taxi. For these, you need a Eurotaxi.
Hailing a Standard Taxi
You can:
- Hail one on the street (a green light on the roof means available).
- Find one at a taxi stand (parada de taxi). These are marked throughout the city.
- Book by phone or through apps like FREE NOW, Uber, or Cabify.

Ride-Hailing Apps
Uber
Uber operates in Madrid with standard vehicle options. There is no dedicated wheelchair-accessible vehicle category on Uber in Madrid. If you can transfer to a car seat and your wheelchair folds, Uber is a convenient option. Prices are similar to standard taxis.
Cabify
Cabify is a popular ride-hailing service in Spain. It works similarly to Uber. Like Uber, there is no guaranteed wheelchair-accessible vehicle option. Cabify vehicles tend to be newer and well-maintained. The app is available in English.
FREE NOW
FREE NOW connects to Madrid's licensed taxi fleet, including Eurotaxis. This is the only ride-hailing app where you can specifically request an accessible vehicle. Select "Eurotaxi" or "Accessible" in the vehicle options.
FREE NOW for Eurotaxis
FREE NOW is the best app for wheelchair users in Madrid because it is the only one that connects directly to the Eurotaxi fleet. Download it before your trip and set up your payment method. Note that Eurotaxi availability through the app depends on the area and time of day.
Private Accessible Transfer Companies
For pre-booked door-to-door accessible transport, several private companies in Madrid offer wheelchair-accessible minibuses and vans:
- Accessible Madrid (accessiblemadrid.com): Offers accessible transfers, city tours, and day trips in adapted vehicles. English-speaking drivers.
- Tourism for All Spain: Can arrange accessible airport transfers and city transport.
Private transfers cost more than taxis (typically 40 to 80 euros for an airport transfer), but they guarantee an accessible vehicle and can be booked well in advance.
Tipping
Tipping taxi drivers in Madrid is not required but is appreciated. Rounding up to the nearest euro or adding 5 to 10 percent for good service is standard. If the driver helped with your wheelchair or luggage, a small tip of 1 to 2 euros is a nice gesture.
Avoid Unlicensed Transport
Only use licensed taxis (white with red stripe and official taxi number) or recognized ride-hailing apps. Unlicensed vehicles at the airport or train stations may overcharge and will not have wheelchair-accessible equipment. The flat 30 euro airport rate applies only to licensed Madrid taxis.
