Overview

The Basilica di Sant'Ambrogio is one of Milan's oldest churches, founded in 379 AD by the city's patron saint, Ambrose. The current Romanesque structure dates largely from the 11th and 12th centuries. The church features distinctive red brick bell towers, a large four-sided portico (atrium), and important early Christian mosaics. Wheelchair access is possible via a ramp from Via Lanzone, and the main nave is step-free once inside. However, the side chapels, the crypt, and some secondary areas require stairs, limiting the visit for wheelchair users to the main nave and aisles.

Getting There

  • Metro: Sant'Ambrogio station (M2 Green Line) is about 150 meters from Piazza Sant'Ambrogio. The station has elevator access to street level.
  • Bus: Routes 50, 58, and 94 stop near the basilica.
  • Tram: Line 2 serves Via De Amicis, about 200 meters south.
  • Parking: Four parking spaces reserved for visitors with disability permits are available along Via Lanzone.

The main entrance from Piazza Sant'Ambrogio involves two sets of steps (four steps then three steps, heights 14 to 16 cm). Use the ramp entrance from Via Lanzone instead. The ramp is 6.57 meters long and 89 cm wide with handrails on both sides.

Wheelchair Accessibility

  • From Via Lanzone, the four-sided portico can be reached by climbing three steps or via a ramp that is 6.57 meters long, 89 cm wide, with handrails on both sides.
  • From the portico, the interior is accessed through two side entrances. The left side entrance has two steps (13 cm high) and a single door with a 118 cm passage width.
  • Once inside, the naves of the basilica are obstacle-free with smooth stone flooring.
  • The side chapels require climbing five consecutive steps (16 cm high each) and are not accessible by wheelchair.
  • The crypt beneath the altar is only accessible via stairs and is not wheelchair accessible.
  • The museum attached to the basilica is small and may have limited accessibility. Ask at the entrance for current conditions.

Accessible Toilets

There are no dedicated accessible restrooms inside the basilica. The nearest accessible public restrooms are at the Sant'Ambrogio metro station.

Tips for Visitors with Disabilities

  • Use the Via Lanzone entrance with the ramp. The Piazza Sant'Ambrogio main entrance has two flights of steps with no ramp alternative.
  • The ramp from Via Lanzone is only 89 cm wide, which is tight for larger power wheelchairs. Measure your wheelchair width before planning this route.
  • The main nave and aisles provide the best experience. The mosaic in the apse and the golden altar of Vuolvinio can be viewed from the nave without climbing steps.
  • Visiting hours are split with a midday break. Plan your visit for morning (10:00 to 12:00) or afternoon (14:30 to 18:00).
  • The piazza outside the basilica has cafes with outdoor seating on flat paving, suitable for a rest before or after your visit.
