Overview
Castello Sforzesco is a 15th-century fortress built by the Duke of Milan, Francesco Sforza. The castle houses eight civic museums, including the Museum of Ancient Art, the Picture Gallery, the Museum of Musical Instruments, and the Pietà Rondanini museum featuring Michelangelo's last unfinished sculpture. The main entrance is accessible via a ramp, and most museum areas have elevators and ramps. The three interconnected courtyards are freely open to the public. The main challenge for wheelchair users is the cobblestone surface in the courtyards.
Getting There
- Metro: Cairoli station (M1 Red Line) is about 200 meters from the main entrance at Torre del Filarete. Cadorna station (M1 and M2) is about 300 meters from the west side.
- Tram: Lines 1, 2, 4, 12, 14, and 27 stop near the castle.
- Bus: Routes 18, 50, 57, 58, and 61 serve nearby stops.
- Approach: The sidewalk along Via Dante from Cairoli metro to the castle entrance is flat and paved with smooth stone.
The castle courtyards are surfaced with cobblestones (sampietrini). While passable in a wheelchair, the uneven surface can be tiring over longer distances. Stick to the smoother paths along the edges where available.

Tips for Visitors with Disabilities
- The cobblestone courtyards are the biggest accessibility challenge. If possible, use a wheelchair with larger front casters or pneumatic tires for a smoother ride.
- The museums closest to the main entrance (Museum of Ancient Art and Pietà Rondanini) require the least courtyard travel.
- Visit on the first or third Tuesday afternoon (after 14:00) or the first Sunday of the month for free museum admission.
- The castle connects directly to Parco Sempione through the rear exit, providing a step-free route to the park.
- Allow at least 2 hours for the museums. The castle complex is large, covering about 2 hectares.
