Overview
Fondazione Prada is a contemporary art foundation housed in a converted distillery complex in southern Milan. The campus, redesigned by architecture firm OMA and Rem Koolhaas, opened in 2015.
It includes seven renovated buildings from the original 1910 distillery, plus three new structures: the exhibition hall "Podium," the cinema, and the nine-story "Torre" (tower). The complex also houses Bar Luce, a cafe designed by filmmaker Wes Anderson with colorful retro decor.
All venues within the Fondazione Prada complex are accessible to wheelchair users with elevators and step-free routes. Wheelchairs are available free of charge at the reception desk.
Admission is free for visitors with disabilities and one companion. The bookshop, Bar Luce, and outdoor courtyard can be visited without purchasing a ticket.
Getting There
- Metro: Lodi T.I.B.B. station (M3 Gialla) is about 800 meters from the entrance, roughly a 12-minute roll. The route follows Via Ripamonti on flat, paved sidewalks. The station has elevator access to street level.
- Bus: Routes 24 and 65 stop within 200 meters of the entrance on Via Ripamonti. Low-floor buses with ramps operate on these routes.
- Tram: Line 24 runs along Viale Isonzo, stopping about 400 meters from the complex.
- By car: Limited street parking is available on Via Lorenzini and surrounding streets. The nearest accessible parking is on Largo Isarco. The area is outside the ZTL (restricted traffic zone).
- Taxi: Taxis can drop off directly at the main entrance on Largo Isarco. The curb is at standard height with a level transition to the entrance area.
The Bar Luce cafe, bookshop, and outdoor courtyard areas can be visited without purchasing an admission ticket. This is a good option if you want to experience the architecture and enjoy a coffee without committing to a full museum visit.
Wheelchair Accessibility
- The main entrance consists of two gates side by side. The first gate is 5 meters wide with no steps, suitable for all wheelchair types. The second gate (187 cm wide) has one step (12 cm high) and should be avoided by wheelchair users.
- After passing through the wide gate, a 50-meter paved courtyard leads to the exhibition entrance. The courtyard surface is smooth paving, easy to roll on in all weather.
- An automatic sliding door (180 cm wide) on the left side of the courtyard leads to the start of the exhibition spaces.
- All exhibition buildings within the complex have elevator access. The older distillery buildings have been retrofitted with modern lifts that fit standard and power wheelchairs.
- The Torre (tower building) has a dedicated elevator serving all nine floors. The upper floors offer panoramic views over southern Milan and the city skyline.
- Interior floors throughout the complex are smooth polished concrete, which provides excellent wheelchair rolling surfaces with no thresholds between rooms.
- Wheelchairs are available free of charge at the reception desk. No reservation is required. Ask at the ticket counter when you arrive.
- The outdoor courtyard connecting the various buildings is paved with smooth surfaces suitable for all wheelchair types. The distances between buildings are short, typically 20 to 50 meters.
- Pathways between buildings are wide (3 meters or more) with no curbs or level changes.
- The Podium (the main ground-level exhibition hall) is completely flat inside with a single open floor plan, making it one of the easiest spaces to navigate.
- The Haunted House and Deposito buildings may have narrower corridors in some installations. Ask staff which buildings have the most wheelchair-friendly layouts for current exhibitions.
The campus has ten buildings spread across the site. You do not need to visit all of them. Ask reception staff to recommend 3 to 4 buildings based on current exhibitions and your available time and energy.
Key Buildings on the Campus
The Fondazione Prada campus includes several distinct buildings. Not all may be open during your visit, as exhibitions rotate. Here are the main structures and their accessibility:
- Podium: The main ground-level exhibition hall. Completely flat interior with a single open floor plan. The easiest building for wheelchair users.
- Cisterna: A former distillery cistern, now used for exhibitions. Step-free entry with smooth concrete floors.
- Torre (Tower): Nine stories with a dedicated elevator. Upper floors offer panoramic views. The restaurant is on the top floor.
- Haunted House: A four-story building with an elevator. Some installations may have narrower passages depending on the current show.
- Cinema: A screening room used for film programs. Accessible entry and wheelchair viewing positions.
- Bar Luce: Wes Anderson-designed cafe. Step-free entry, accessible tables, and accessible restrooms.
- Deposito: A large exhibition space. Elevator access to multiple levels.
Ask at reception which buildings are open and which current exhibitions are most accessible.
Accessible Toilets
Accessible restrooms are available within the exhibition complex, clearly signed from the main reception area. They are located on the ground floor near the entrance and meet Italian accessibility standards with grab bars, adequate turning space, and accessible sink height. Additional restrooms are available at Bar Luce and in the Torre building. All are accessible.
Tips for Visitors with Disabilities
- Present your disability certificate or European Disability Card at the ticket desk for free admission for yourself and one companion.
- The complex spans multiple buildings across the campus. Ask staff at reception for a suggested route that minimizes outdoor travel between buildings. They can also advise which exhibitions are currently on which floors.
- Bar Luce (the Wes Anderson-designed cafe) is fully accessible and located in the courtyard. It serves coffee, pastries, and light meals. It can get crowded on weekends, especially Saturday afternoons. Weekday mornings are the quietest time.
- The Torre building has large elevators and panoramic views from the upper floors. The restaurant on the top floor (Torre Restaurant) is also accessible by elevator. Reservations are recommended for the restaurant.
- For visitor assistance or to ask about specific accessibility needs, contact the Visitors Service in advance: +39 02 56662612 or [email protected]. Staff are responsive to accessibility inquiries.
- The complex is large. Allow 2 to 3 hours for a full visit covering all open buildings. A focused visit to 3 to 4 buildings takes about 90 minutes. Benches and seating areas are placed throughout the courtyard and inside exhibition spaces.
- The surrounding neighborhood has smooth, modern sidewalks. Several restaurants and cafes within a 5-minute roll on Via Ripamonti are accessible.
- Fondazione Prada is about 3.5 km from the Duomo. It is not in the usual tourist center, so the area is calmer and less crowded than central Milan.
- The cinema building occasionally screens films related to current exhibitions. Check the website calendar for screenings. The cinema is accessible.
- Exhibitions change every few months. Check fondazioneprada.org before your visit to see what is currently on display.
- The foundation is closed on Tuesdays. Plan visits for Wednesday through Monday. Weekday mornings (Wednesday and Thursday) tend to be the quietest times.
- Children under 18 and visitors over 65 also receive free admission, separate from the disability exemption.
- Photography is generally allowed in the outdoor courtyard areas. Individual exhibitions may have their own photography policies. Check at reception.
- The bookshop carries art and architecture publications, exhibition catalogs, and Prada-related design items. It is accessible at ground level without a ticket.
- The outdoor courtyard between buildings is a pleasant rest area with benches. In good weather, it serves as an informal gathering space and offers views of the different architectural styles across the campus.
- Fondazione Prada is one of Italy's most important contemporary art institutions. Exhibitions feature international artists and are often large in scale, spanning multiple buildings.
