Overview
Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II is one of the world's oldest shopping arcades, opened in 1877. Its iron-and-glass vaulted roof spans a cruciform layout connecting Piazza del Duomo to Piazza della Scala. The arcade houses luxury shops, restaurants, and historic cafes. All four entrances are step-free, and the interior floor is flat marble and mosaic tile. This makes the Galleria one of Milan's most accessible landmarks for wheelchair users.
Getting There
- Metro: Duomo station (M1 Red Line and M3 Yellow Line) exits into Piazza del Duomo, which connects directly to the Galleria's southern entrance.
- Tram: Lines 1 and 2 stop at Piazza della Scala on the north side of the Galleria.
- On foot: The Galleria is roughly 50 meters from the Duomo. The walk from the metro exit is flat and paved.
- From La Scala: Exit through the north entrance of the Galleria. The walk to Teatro alla Scala is about 100 meters across Piazza della Scala, which is flat and paved.
Wheelchair Accessibility
- All four entrances to the Galleria are step-free. Sidewalk ramps lead from street level to the arcade floor at each entrance.
- The interior floor is polished marble and mosaic tile. The surface is smooth and flat throughout the main corridor and central octagon.
- The arcade is wide, approximately 14.5 meters across, providing ample space for wheelchair navigation even during busy periods.
- Most shops along the ground floor have step-free entrances. Some boutiques on the upper mezzanine level are accessed by stairs only, but these are separate from the main arcade.
- The mosaic floor tiles in the central octagon can be slightly uneven in places, but this does not present a significant barrier.
The Highline Galleria rooftop walkway above the arcade is a separate paid attraction. Check their website at highlinegalleria.it for current accessibility information before visiting.
Accessible Toilets
Public restrooms with accessible stalls are available in the basement level of the Galleria. Access is via an elevator near the central octagon. Several restaurants in the Galleria also have accessible restrooms for customers.
Tips for Visitors with Disabilities
- Visit before 10:00 or after 20:00 to avoid the heaviest foot traffic. Midday and weekend afternoons are the busiest times.
- The central octagon is a popular gathering spot and can become crowded. Navigating through groups of tourists may require patience.
- Several restaurants have outdoor seating in the arcade. Tables are placed on the flat marble floor, making them easy to approach in a wheelchair.
- The Galleria connects directly to Piazza della Scala, providing a step-free route between the Duomo area and La Scala opera house.
- Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the arcade.
