Overview
Teatro alla Scala is one of the world's most famous opera houses, opened in 1778. The theater hosts opera, ballet, and orchestral performances throughout its season running from December to July. Wheelchair users can access the stalls via a 15-meter ramp with a 6% slope. Four seats in the stalls are reserved for wheelchair users with companions. The Museo Teatrale alla Scala is also accessible and free for disabled visitors. Boxes and upper galleries are not accessible by wheelchair.
Getting There
- Metro: Duomo station (M1 and M3) is about 300 meters away via the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, which provides a step-free covered route. Alternatively, Montenapoleone (M3) is about 400 meters north.
- Tram: Lines 1 and 2 stop at Piazza della Scala, directly in front of the theater.
- Bus: Route 61 stops nearby on Via Manzoni.
- Approach: Piazza della Scala is flat and paved. The path from the Galleria's north exit to the theater entrance is about 100 meters on smooth pavement.
Wheelchair Accessibility
- The stalls are accessible via a wide opening and an inclined ramp measuring 15 meters in length with a 6% slope.
- Four seats in the stalls are reserved for wheelchair users with four additional seats for companions.
- Four more seats are reserved for visitors with mobility difficulties, each with a companion seat.

- Arrive at least 30 minutes before a performance to allow time for the ramp entrance and settling into your seat.
- The step-free route from Duomo metro through the Galleria to La Scala takes about 10 minutes at a comfortable pace.
