Mostly Accessible

Overview

The Museo Nazionale della Scienza e della Tecnologia Leonardo da Vinci is Italy's largest science and technology museum. Housed in a former 16th-century Olivetan monastery, the museum covers over 50,000 square meters with collections on transportation, communication, energy, materials, and Leonardo da Vinci's inventions. Most areas are accessible via elevators and ramps, and pathways are wide enough for wheelchair navigation. However, some passages in the historic building have steps that are not served by ramps, limiting access to certain sections.

Getting There

  • Metro: Sant'Ambrogio station (M2 Green Line) is about 300 meters from the museum entrance. The station has elevator access.
  • Bus: Routes 50, 58, and 94 stop within 200 meters.
  • Tram: Lines 2 and 14 serve nearby stops on Via Carducci.
  • Approach: Via San Vittore has flat, paved sidewalks. The museum entrance is at street level.

Wheelchair Accessibility

  • The main entrance is step-free and leads to the reception and ticket area.
  • Elevators and ramps provide access to most exhibition areas, including the Leonardo Galleries and the transportation collection.
  • Pathways throughout the museum are wide enough for wheelchairs and strollers.
  • A free wheelchair is available for loan at the ticket office. Bring valid ID.
  • Some passages in the historic monastery building have steps without alternative ramps. These affect a small number of rooms.
  • The submarine Enrico Toti, displayed in the outdoor area, is not accessible to wheelchair users due to the narrow hatches and steep ladders inside.

Contact the museum at [email protected] before your visit if you have specific accessibility needs. Staff can advise on which sections are fully accessible and arrange any required assistance.

Accessible Toilets

Accessible restrooms are available on multiple floors of the museum. They are signed and located near the main exhibition routes.

Tips for Visitors with Disabilities

  • The museum is very large. Pick up a floor map at the ticket office and plan your route to focus on accessible areas first.
  • The Leonardo da Vinci Galleries, one of the main highlights, are among the most accessible sections with modern exhibition design.
  • Weekend and holiday hours extend to 18:30, giving you more time to explore at a relaxed pace.
  • The museum courtyard and garden areas are accessible and provide a quiet rest spot during your visit.
  • Interactive exhibits are positioned at various heights. Most can be reached from a seated position, though some older installations may be higher.
