Overview
Parco Sempione is Milan's largest central park, covering about 38.6 hectares behind Castello Sforzesco. The park was designed in 1888 in the English landscape style and connects the castle to the Arco della Pace triumphal arch. All paths have compact surfaces and the park has wide, step-free entrances at multiple points. The terrain is mostly flat with some gentle slopes. The paths are beaten earth and gravel, which can be soft after rain but are generally passable for wheelchair users in dry conditions.
Getting There
- Metro: Cairoli station (M1) is closest to the Castello Sforzesco entrance on the south side. Cadorna station (M1 and M2) is near the southwest entrance. Lanza station (M2) is near the north entrance.
- Tram: Lines 1, 2, 4, 12, 14, 19, and 27 stop near the park perimeter.
- Bus: Routes 43, 57, 61, 70, and 94 serve nearby stops.
- Parking: Reserved parking spaces for visitors with disability permits are available near several park entrances.
Wheelchair Accessibility
- The park has multiple wide entrances without steps. The main entrance from Castello Sforzesco on the south side is fully step-free.
- All paths have compact surfaces. The main routes are wide (approximately 3 to 4 meters) and generally obstacle-free.
- The ground surface is beaten earth with some gravel sections. These surfaces are firm in dry weather but can become soft and muddy after heavy rain.
- The park perimeter path is about 3.5 kilometers and mostly flat with slight slopes in a few areas.
- The park interior has a mix of paved and unpaved sections. The paths closest to the Castello and the Arco della Pace tend to be the most compacted and easiest for wheelchair travel.
- Benches are placed throughout the park, many in shaded areas under trees.
After rainfall, the beaten earth paths can become soft and muddy. Check the weather forecast and visit on dry days for the best wheelchair experience. The paths nearest the Castello and Arco della Pace dry fastest.
Accessible Toilets
An accessible restroom is located near the play area, next to the Arena Civica. It is the only accessible toilet in the park, so plan accordingly.
Tips for Visitors with Disabilities
- Enter the park from the Castello Sforzesco side for the flattest and most compacted paths. The transition from the castle courtyard to the park is step-free.
- The Arco della Pace at the northwest end of the park is about 800 meters from the castle entrance along the main path. This is a flat, straight route suitable for wheelchairs.
- The park contains SOS pillars at intervals for emergencies.
- Milan's traditional drinking fountains (vedovelle) are located throughout the park, providing free drinking water. Most are at a standing height.
- The Triennale design museum is located inside the park on the east side. It is a separate institution with its own accessibility features and admission.
