Overview
The Pinacoteca Ambrosiana is a historic art gallery and library founded in 1618 by Cardinal Federico Borromeo. The collection includes works by Leonardo da Vinci (the Codex Atlanticus), Raphael, Caravaggio, and Botticelli. The gallery spans three floors, but wheelchair access is limited to the ground and first floors (rooms 1 to 7) via elevators and wheelchair lifts. The upper exhibition rooms and the Crypt of San Sepolcro are not accessible to wheelchair users. This limits the visit to about half the collection, but the accessible rooms include several major works.
Getting There
- Metro: Duomo station (M1 and M3) is about 400 meters east. Cordusio station (M1) is about 250 meters north.
- Tram: Lines 2, 3, and 14 stop near Via Torino, about 150 meters from the entrance.
- Bus: Routes 54 and 60 serve the area.
- Approach: Piazza Pio XI is a small square with flat stone paving. The approach from Via Torino or Via Spadari is level.
Wheelchair users can only access rooms 1 to 7 on the ground and first floors. The upper floor galleries and the Crypt of San Sepolcro are not accessible due to the historic building's structural constraints. Check the museum website for current details on which works are displayed in the accessible rooms.

- The upper gallery rooms (above the first floor) are not accessible by wheelchair.
