Fully Accessible

Overview

The Pinacoteca di Brera is one of Italy's most important art galleries, housed in the 17th-century Palazzo Brera. The collection spans six centuries of Italian painting, including works by Raphael, Caravaggio, Mantegna, and Bellini. The gallery has invested in strong accessibility features, with an elevator entrance at Via Fiori Oscuri 2, step-free routes through all exhibition rooms, and two electric mobility scooters available for loan. Visitors with disabilities and their companions enter free.

Getting There

  • Metro: Lanza station (M2 Green Line) is about 300 meters from the entrance. Montenapoleone station (M3 Yellow Line) is about 500 meters southeast.
  • Tram: Lines 1, 4, and 12 stop within 200 meters of Via Brera.
  • Bus: Route 61 serves Via Manzoni, about 250 meters east.
  • Approach: The Brera district has narrow streets, most with smooth stone paving. Via Brera is flat. The accessible entrance is at Via Fiori Oscuri 2, a side street parallel to Via Brera.

The accessible entrance is at Via Fiori Oscuri 2, not the main entrance on Via Brera. Look for the Reception Pinacoteca sign. Reserved parking is available in the courtyard for visitors with disabilities.

Wheelchair Accessibility

  • The accessible entrance at Via Fiori Oscuri 2 has a lift providing step-free access to all gallery levels.
  • Two electric mobility scooters are available for free loan at the ticket office.
  • All exhibition rooms are connected by step-free routes with elevators between floors.
  • The main courtyard is accessible from the street and connects to the gallery entrance.
  • Reserved parking spaces are available in the courtyard for visitors with a disability permit.
  • Free entry for visitors with disabilities and one companion.
  • An audio-videoguide in Italian Sign Language (LIS) is available, covering ten of the gallery's masterpieces.
  • The DescriVedendo program provides descriptive experiences for visually impaired visitors.

Accessible Toilets

Accessible restrooms are available on multiple floors throughout the museum. They are clearly signed and maintained to accessibility standards.

Tips for Visitors with Disabilities

  • Request a mobility scooter when purchasing your ticket. Only two are available, so arrive early to improve availability.
  • The gallery is large with 38 rooms. Plan to spend at least 90 minutes for a thorough visit.
  • Audio guides are available through the izi.TRAVEL app in several languages. Download the app before your visit for the best experience.
  • The first Sunday of each month offers free admission for everyone, which means larger crowds. Weekday mornings are quieter.
  • The Palazzo Brera courtyard also houses the Braidense National Library, the Astronomical Observatory, and the Academy of Fine Arts. These are separate institutions with their own accessibility arrangements.
