Mostly Accessible

Overview

Santa Maria delle Grazie is a 15th-century Dominican church and UNESCO World Heritage Site. The adjoining refectory, the Cenacolo Vinciano, contains Leonardo da Vinci's The Last Supper, painted between 1495 and 1498. The Last Supper viewing area is accessible via ramps, and wheelchair users can view the painting alongside other visitors. The church itself has step-free access at the main entrance. Only 40 people are admitted to the Cenacolo every 15 minutes, so advance booking is essential.

Getting There

  • Metro: Cadorna station (M1 and M2) is about 500 meters east. Conciliazione station (M1) is about 400 meters south.
  • Tram: Line 16 stops on Corso Magenta, about 50 meters from the church entrance.
  • Bus: Route 18 serves Corso Magenta.
  • Approach: Corso Magenta has wide, flat sidewalks with smooth paving. The church is set slightly back from the street on a small piazza with level access.

Tickets to The Last Supper sell out weeks in advance. Every visitor, including children and infants, must have a reservation. Book at cenacolovinciano.org as soon as tickets for your dates become available. Tickets are released in quarterly blocks.

Wheelchair Accessibility

  • The Cenacolo Vinciano (Last Supper viewing room) has ramped access from the entrance. The exhibition area pathways are wide enough for wheelchair navigation.
  • The church of Santa Maria delle Grazie has a step-free main entrance.
  • The interior of the church has smooth stone floors and wide aisles.
  • Visitors enter the Cenacolo in timed groups of up to 40 people. Each group has 15 minutes to view the painting.
  • Contact the museum management in advance if you have specific accessibility needs. They can arrange assistance for your visit.
  • The church's cloister is accessible from the main church interior.

Accessible Toilets

Accessible restrooms are available in the Cenacolo Vinciano museum building. Check with staff upon arrival for the current location.

Tips for Visitors with Disabilities

  • Book tickets at least 2 to 3 months in advance for popular dates (weekends, summer, holidays). Tickets for January through April 2026 typically go on sale the previous December.
  • Arrive 15 minutes before your scheduled time slot. Late arrivals forfeit their tickets.
  • Photography is not permitted inside the Cenacolo. This means shorter viewing time is not wasted on camera setup.
  • The church is free to enter separately from the Last Supper and is worth visiting for its Renaissance architecture and Bramante's tribune.
  • The area around Corso Magenta is flat and well-paved, making it a good neighborhood for wheelchair exploration. Several cafes nearby have step-free entrances.
