Overview
Milan is served by two main airports: Malpensa (MXP), located 50 km northwest of the city, and Linate (LIN), located just 7 km east of the center. Both airports are operated by SEA (Societa Esercizi Aeroportuali) and offer free PRM assistance through the Sala Amica service.
Booking PRM Assistance
PRM stands for "Person with Reduced Mobility." Both airports provide free assistance through Sala Amica, operated by SEA. The service covers arrival, departure, and transit, including help with check-in, security, boarding, luggage, and transfers between terminals.
How to book:
- Through your airline: Request PRM assistance when you book your flight. This is the most reliable method.
- By email: Contact [email protected] at least 48 hours before your flight.
- On arrival: Go to a Sala Amica help point (marked with the blue wheelchair symbol) in the arrivals hall. Without a booking, expect a wait of 20 to 40 minutes.
Arrive at the airport at least 2.5 hours before departure (3 hours for long-haul flights) so Sala Amica staff have time to assist you through security and to the gate.
Malpensa Airport (MXP)
Malpensa has two terminals. Terminal 1 handles most international and long-haul flights. Terminal 2 serves mainly low-cost and charter airlines. A free shuttle bus connects both terminals. The shuttle bus is wheelchair accessible with a ramp.
Terminal Accessibility
Both terminals have:
- Elevators connecting all floors, with Braille buttons and voice announcements
- Tactile paving throughout
- Accessible toilets on every level
- Lowered check-in counters and self-service kiosks
- Telephones with Braille keypads
Getting to Milan from Malpensa
Malpensa Express (Recommended): Trenord trains run from both terminals to Milano Centrale (about 50 minutes) and Milano Cadorna (about 35 minutes). All trains are low-floor with retractable ramps, wheelchair spaces marked with a blue icon, and accessible toilets. Trains run every 30 minutes. A single ticket costs 13 EUR. Book Sala Blu assistance at least 48 hours in advance by calling 800 906060 (from Italian phones) or +39 02 323232 (from abroad).
Airport bus: Several bus companies (Terravision, Autostradale) run services to Milano Centrale. Buses have luggage holds but wheelchair accessibility varies. Confirm when booking.
Accessible taxi: The fixed fare from Malpensa to Milan city center is 114 EUR (all-inclusive, no supplements). Book a wheelchair-accessible taxi through Radiotaxi by calling 02 8585 or 02 4040. Request an "Easy Taxi" vehicle. See our Taxis guide for details.
Malpensa Express Is the Best Option
The Malpensa Express train is the most reliable accessible option. Trains are modern, low-floor, and run frequently. If you book Sala Blu assistance in advance, staff will meet you at the platform with a ramp for boarding.
Linate Airport (LIN)
Linate is Milan's city airport, much smaller than Malpensa. It has a single terminal and handles mainly domestic and short-haul European flights. Walking distances inside the terminal are short, which makes it easier to navigate.
Terminal Accessibility
- Elevators connecting all levels, with Braille buttons and voice guidance
- Tactile paths throughout the terminal
- Accessible toilets on every floor
- Sala Amica help point in the arrivals hall
Getting to Milan from Linate
M4 Metro (Recommended): The M4 Blue Line connects Linate directly to the city center. The line fully opened in October 2024 and runs 15 km from Linate to San Cristoforo. All 21 stations are fully accessible, with elevators at every station and level boarding with minimal platform gaps. The journey from Linate to San Babila (city center) takes about 12 minutes. A standard ATM ticket costs 2.20 EUR.
Bus 73: Runs from Linate to the city center (San Babila). ATM buses are low-floor with electric ramps. However, the M4 metro is faster and more accessible.
Accessible taxi: The fare from Linate to the city center is metered, typically 20 to 30 EUR depending on your destination. Book a wheelchair-accessible taxi by calling 02 8585 or 02 4040.
M4 Metro Night Service
The M4 metro does not run between approximately 12:30 AM and 5:30 AM. During these hours, the NM4 night bus replaces the line. The night bus is accessible with a low floor and ramp, but runs less frequently.
