Overview
Official taxis in Milan are white cars with a "TAXI" sign on the roof and a municipal license number on the door. Fares are regulated by the city with metered rates for urban trips and fixed fares for airport transfers. Milan has about 50 wheelchair-accessible taxis (called "Easy Taxi") in its fleet, equipped with rear ramps or hydraulic lifts that allow passengers to board while seated in their wheelchair.
Accessible taxis cannot be hailed from the street. You must book them in advance by phone or through an app.
Wheelchair-Accessible Vehicles (Easy Taxi)
Milan's wheelchair-accessible taxis are marked with the Easy Taxi logo. They are vans or minivans with:
- A rear ramp or automated lift system for wheelchair boarding
- Securement straps and locking points inside the vehicle
- Enough space for a power wheelchair (up to 70 cm wide, 120 cm long)
- The same metered fares as standard taxis (no surcharge for accessibility)
How to Book an Easy Taxi
By phone:
- Radiotaxi 028585: Call 02 8585 and request a "taxi accessibile" or "Easy Taxi." Available 24 hours. This is Milan's largest taxi cooperative.
- Taxi Blu 024040: Call 02 4040 and request an accessible vehicle. Also available 24 hours.
Give at least 1 to 2 hours of advance notice for urban trips. For airport transfers, book the day before.
By app:
- InTaxi app: The official app for Radiotaxi 028585. You can request an Easy Taxi through the app's accessibility option.
- IT Taxi app: Another taxi booking app that covers Milan. Allows you to request an accessible vehicle.
By SMS or WhatsApp: Radiotaxi 028585 also accepts bookings by SMS or WhatsApp. Send your pickup address, destination, and note that you need a wheelchair-accessible vehicle.
Book Early for Accessible Taxis
Milan has about 50 Easy Taxi vehicles serving the entire city. Demand can be high, especially during rush hours and at the airports. For scheduled trips, book at least a day in advance. Same-day requests may require a long wait.
Standard Taxis
Standard Milan taxis (white sedans) work for wheelchair users who can transfer to a car seat. Drivers should help load a folded manual wheelchair into the trunk. Most sedan trunks fit a standard manual wheelchair but not a power wheelchair or mobility scooter.
Before getting in, confirm with the driver that your wheelchair fits. If you have a larger chair, you need an Easy Taxi or a private NCC transfer.
Fares
Metered Fares (Urban Trips)
Milan taxis use a meter. Regulated rates include:
- Minimum fare: 3.30 EUR
- Per km rate: Approximately 1.10 EUR per km
- Supplements: Small surcharges apply for night travel (after 9 PM), Sundays, holidays, and luggage
A typical taxi ride within the city center costs 8 to 15 EUR. A ride from Milano Centrale to the Duomo costs about 10 to 12 EUR.
Airport Fixed Fares
| Route | Fixed Fare |
|---|---|
| Malpensa Airport to/from Milan city center | 114 EUR |
| Malpensa to/from Linate Airport | 128 EUR |
| Malpensa to/from Fiera Milano (Rho) | 94 EUR |
| Linate to/from Fiera Milano (Rho) | 68 EUR |
Fixed fares are all-inclusive (no supplements, no luggage charges). Confirm the fixed fare with the driver before departure. The fare from Linate to Milan city center is not fixed and is calculated by meter, typically 20 to 30 EUR.
Where to Find Taxis
Official taxi ranks are located at:
- Milano Centrale (front entrance)
- Cadorna station
- Garibaldi FS station
- Piazza Duomo
- Piazza San Babila
- Both airport terminals
Do not accept rides from unlicensed drivers who approach you inside stations or airports. Always use the official taxi rank or book by phone or app.
Ride-Hailing and Taxi Apps
Free Now: Available in Milan for booking licensed taxis through the app. You can request a standard taxi. Wheelchair-accessible vehicle requests are limited through the app, so phone booking is more reliable for accessible taxis.
Uber: Uber operates in Milan, but only UberBlack (licensed chauffeur cars, called NCC). There is no UberX or UberPool in Italy. Uber vehicles in Milan are typically sedans and not reliably wheelchair accessible. The app does offer a WAV (wheelchair-accessible vehicle) option in some cities, but availability in Milan is very limited.
IT Taxi / appTaxi: Italian taxi apps that connect to local cooperatives. Both are available in Milan and allow you to request rides. You can note accessibility requirements in the app.
For guaranteed wheelchair-accessible transport, calling Radiotaxi 028585 or Taxi Blu 024040 directly remains the most reliable method.
NCC (Private Hire) Services
NCC (Noleggio Con Conducente) vehicles are private hire cars with a driver. They must be pre-booked and cannot be hailed on the street. NCC services are useful when you need a guaranteed accessible vehicle, especially for:
- Airport transfers with a power wheelchair or mobility scooter
- Day trips outside Milan (Lake Como, Bergamo, outlets)
- Group travel requiring a larger vehicle
Search for "NCC accessibile Milano" or ask your hotel concierge to arrange one. Prices are higher than standard taxis but include guaranteed accessibility and door-to-door service.
Tell the Dispatcher Your Wheelchair Type
When booking any taxi or NCC transfer, specify whether you use a manual wheelchair, power wheelchair, or mobility scooter, and whether you will remain seated in it during travel. This helps the dispatcher send the right vehicle.
Tipping
Tipping taxi drivers in Italy is not required. Rounding up to the nearest euro is appreciated. If the driver helped with your wheelchair, luggage, or ramp deployment, a tip of 1 to 3 EUR is a kind gesture.
