Milano Centrale
Milano Centrale is Milan's main train station and one of the largest in Europe. It serves Trenitalia high-speed trains, Italo trains, Trenord regional trains, and the Malpensa Express. The station connects to Metro Lines M2 (Green) and M3 (Yellow).
Accessibility at Milano Centrale
Milano Centrale is a terminus station, meaning all tracks end at the same level. The monumental main hall is on an upper level, with platforms below. Despite the grand architecture, the station has good accessibility:
- Elevators connecting the main hall, platform level, and underground metro level
- Escalators as additional access between levels
- Accessible toilets near the main hall and platform level
- Tactile paths along platforms
- Lowered ticket counters and accessible self-service machines
- Level access from the platform concourse to all platform tracks
Sala Blu at Milano Centrale
Sala Blu is the free disability assistance service operated by RFI (Rete Ferroviaria Italiana) at major Italian train stations. The Sala Blu office at Milano Centrale provides:
- Wheelchair assistance to and from the train
- Platform ramp deployment for boarding and exiting
- Help with luggage
- A comfortable waiting area
- Information on accessible connections
How to book Sala Blu assistance:
- Online: Through the Sala Blu portal on the RFI website (rfi.it).
- Phone: Call the free number 800 906060 (from Italian landlines) or +39 02 323232 (from mobile phones and from abroad). Lines are open 6:45 to 21:30, every day including holidays.
- In person: Visit the Sala Blu office at Milano Centrale.
- Advance notice: Book at least 12 hours in advance. For the best experience, book 24 to 48 hours ahead.
Book Sala Blu Early
While 12 hours is the minimum notice, booking Sala Blu assistance 24 to 48 hours in advance gives you a confirmed time slot. The service is free for all passengers with reduced mobility. Staff will meet you at the agreed point and escort you to your train.
Milano Cadorna
Milano Cadorna is a terminus station in the city center, primarily serving Trenord regional and suburban trains, including the Malpensa Express to Malpensa Airport. It connects to Metro Lines M1 (Red) and M2 (Green).
Accessibility at Cadorna
- Elevators connecting the metro level to the station concourse and platforms
- Level access from the concourse to platform tracks
- Accessible toilets in the station

Milano Porta Garibaldi
Porta Garibaldi is a through station (not a terminus) in the Isola neighborhood. It serves Trenitalia and Italo high-speed trains, plus Trenord regional services. It connects to Metro Line M2 (Green) and M5 (Lilac).
Accessibility at Porta Garibaldi
- Elevators connecting the main hall to platforms via an overpass
- Escalators as additional access
- Accessible toilets in the station
- Sala Blu assistance available
Porta Garibaldi is a useful alternative to Milano Centrale for some high-speed trains, and the M5 connection provides fully accessible metro access (level boarding, no gaps).
Trenitalia Trains
Trenitalia is Italy's national rail operator. From Milan, Trenitalia runs high-speed Frecce services and regional trains across Italy.
High-Speed Trains (Frecce)
- Frecciarossa: Italy's fastest trains (up to 300 km/h), serving Rome, Florence, Naples, Venice, Turin, and Bologna from Milan. All have wheelchair spaces (typically in carriage 3), accessible toilets, and priority seating. 100% of Frecciarossa trains have equipped wheelchair areas.
- Frecciargento: Also have wheelchair spaces and accessible toilets, with more limited availability.
Booking Wheelchair Spaces on Trenitalia
Wheelchair spaces must be booked in advance. You cannot board and hope to find an empty wheelchair space.
- Through Sala Blu: Call 800 906060 (Italian landlines) or +39 02 323232 (mobile/abroad). This is the most reliable method.
- Trenitalia website: Some wheelchair spaces can be booked online by selecting the wheelchair option during the booking process.
- At the station: Visit a Trenitalia ticket counter.
Wheelchair size limits for Trenitalia: Maximum width 70 cm, depth 120 cm, weight 200 kg (including passenger).
Italo Trains
Italo is Italy's private high-speed train operator, running services from Milano Centrale and Milano Porta Garibaldi to Rome, Florence, Naples, Venice, Bologna, and Turin.
Accessibility on Italo
All Italo trains have wheelchair spaces. On Italo AGV trains, the wheelchair space is in carriage 8. On Italo EVO trains, wheelchair spaces are in carriage 3. Each has an adjacent accessible toilet and priority seating nearby.
Wheelchair size limits for Italo: Maximum width 70 cm, depth 120 cm, height 109 cm, total weight (wheelchair plus passenger) 300 kg.
Booking Wheelchair Spaces on Italo
Wheelchair spaces on Italo must be booked by phone. Call Pronto Italo at +39 06 0708 (daily 7:00 to 23:00) and request an accessible seat. There is no extra charge for the booking service. Station assistance is provided by RFI staff, so also book Sala Blu separately for platform and boarding help. Arrive at the station at least 30 minutes before departure.
Italo Booking Tip
Italo wheelchair spaces cannot currently be booked online. You must call Pronto Italo at +39 06 0708. The service is free, and staff speak Italian and English. Book as early as possible because each train has only 2 wheelchair spaces.
Trenord (Suburban and Regional Trains)
Trenord operates suburban (Lines S1 through S13) and regional trains in Lombardy, including the Malpensa Express. Newer rolling stock has low-floor boarding and wheelchair spaces. Older trains may have steps at the doors and require a portable ramp from station staff.
If you need to take a Trenord regional train, book Sala Blu assistance so staff can provide a ramp and help with boarding. The same phone number and booking process applies (800 906060 or +39 02 323232).
