Overview
Palazzo Massimo alle Terme is one of the four sites of the National Roman Museum (Museo Nazionale Romano) and holds one of the world's finest collections of Roman art. The museum occupies a late 19th-century palace near Termini station, extensively renovated in the 1990s to serve as a modern museum space. Highlights include breathtaking Roman frescoes from the Villa of Livia, elaborate floor mosaics, portrait busts, the Boxer at Rest bronze sculpture, and one of the largest collections of Roman coins in existence.
This is one of Rome's most accessible museums. The conversion from college to museum prioritized full accessibility, with elevators to all four floors, ramps, wide corridors, and step-free routes throughout. Wheelchair loan is available free of charge.
Getting There
- Metro: Termini station (Lines A and B) is directly across the street. Both lines have elevator access. Exit the station on the south side (Piazza dei Cinquecento) and the museum is immediately visible across the piazza, about a 3-minute roll on flat paved ground.
- Metro: Repubblica station (Line A) is a 5-minute roll south on Via Nazionale. The station has elevator access.
- Bus: Dozens of bus routes stop at Termini. The museum is within sight of the main bus terminal at Piazza dei Cinquecento.
- Accessible entrance: The main entrance on Largo di Villa Peretti is step-free.
Wheelchair Accessibility
- The main entrance is fully step-free. The building was renovated specifically for museum use in the 1990s, with modern accessibility standards throughout.
- Elevators serve all four exhibition floors, allowing complete access to the entire collection.
- Ramps are provided at any level changes within the galleries.
- Corridors and gallery spaces are wide, with enough room for comfortable wheelchair navigation even when other visitors are present.
- Free wheelchair loan is available at the entrance. Ask at the reception desk.
- Displays and labels are placed at heights accessible from a seated position.
- The second-floor rooms containing the Villa of Livia frescoes and the mosaic galleries are among the museum's highlights and are fully accessible via elevator.
Accessible Toilets
Accessible toilets are available on multiple floors. They include grab rails, emergency pull cords, and adequate turning space for standard wheelchairs. Ask staff at reception for directions to the nearest one.
Tips for Visitors with Disabilities
- Admission is free for disabled visitors and one companion. Bring your disability card or documentation.
- The ticket includes entry to Palazzo Altemps and the Baths of Diocletian (both are also part of the National Roman Museum). The ticket is valid for 1 week.
- The first Sunday of the month offers free admission for all visitors at all three museum sites.
- Plan 1.5 to 2 hours for a thorough visit. The museum is not enormous, making it manageable without exhaustion.
- The basement level houses the coin collection and a mummy. The second floor has the famous frescoes. Prioritize the second floor if your time or energy is limited.
- The museum is rarely crowded, especially compared to the Colosseum or Vatican Museums. You will often have gallery rooms to yourself.
- The museum's location next to Termini makes it an ideal first or last stop on a day of sightseeing, as all transit connects here.
- Free guided tours designed for visitors with disabilities are offered periodically, led by specially trained staff from the Educational Service. Check the website or call ahead for the schedule.
- The nearby Baths of Diocletian (Terme di Diocleziano), another National Roman Museum site, is a 5-minute roll away and has some accessible areas, though the ancient ruins present more barriers.
