Mostly Accessible

Overview

St. Peter's Basilica is the largest church in the world and the spiritual center of the Roman Catholic faith. The interior spans over 15,000 square meters and features masterworks including Michelangelo's Pieta and Bernini's Baldachin. The main floor of the basilica is fully accessible to wheelchair users via ramps and an elevator. However, the dome climb (551 steps) is not accessible. Admission to the basilica is free.

Getting There

  • Metro: Ottaviano-San Pietro station (Line A) is about a 10-minute roll from St. Peter's Square. The route along Via Ottaviano is mostly flat with smooth sidewalks.
  • Bus: Routes 40 and 64 run from Roma Termini to the Vatican area. Get off at the Cavalleggeri stop. Route 81 also stops nearby.
  • From Vatican Museums: If you exit the museums through the internal one-way passage, you arrive directly inside St. Peter's Basilica. Confirm at the museum entrance that the passage is accessible on the day of your visit.
  • St. Peter's Square: The square (Piazza San Pietro) is flat with smooth paving stones. Crossing it to reach the basilica entrance takes about 5 minutes at a comfortable roll.

Wheelchair Accessibility

  • The accessible entrance for wheelchair users is located at the right-hand hemicycle of St. Peter's Square. Look for the security checkpoint on the right side, which has a ramp for step-free access.
  • After security, a wheelchair ramp leads to the metal detectors. An elevator near the gift shop area brings visitors to the portico level.
  • A ramp in the portico leads up into the main church interior. This ramp is steep, so you may need assistance if using a manual wheelchair.
  • The entire main floor of the basilica is step-free and spacious. All major artworks and chapels on the ground level are accessible.
  • The dome (cupola) is NOT accessible by wheelchair. Reaching it requires climbing 551 steps, with no elevator option beyond the base.
  • Staff can direct you to the elevator to reach the base of the dome for views, but you cannot enter the dome itself in a wheelchair.
  • St. Peter's Square is paved with smooth sanpietrini (cobblestones) that are generally manageable for wheelchairs, though the square is very large.

For accessibility questions or to arrange assistance in advance, contact the basilica at [email protected] before your visit.

Accessible Toilets

An accessible restroom is located near the coat check area inside the basilica. There are also accessible toilets in the colonnades of St. Peter's Square.

Tips for Visitors with Disabilities

  • Admission is free. No ticket or reservation is needed for the main basilica, though long security lines are common.
  • The security line on the right side (accessible entrance) typically moves faster than the main line on the left.
  • Visit early in the morning (before 9:00am) to avoid the worst crowds. Midday lines can stretch for over an hour.
  • A strict dress code is enforced: shoulders and knees must be covered. This applies to all visitors.
  • The basilica closes early on Wednesdays when papal audiences are held in St. Peter's Square.
  • Combine your visit with the Vatican Museums. If you visit the museums first, you can exit through the internal passage directly into the basilica.
  • The Vatican Grottoes (below the basilica) have limited accessibility. Ask staff about current access conditions.
  • There is no dedicated wheelchair loan service at the basilica. Bring your own mobility equipment.
