Mostly Accessible

Overview

The Vatican Museums house one of the world's most important art collections, spanning over 70,000 works across 54 galleries. The collection includes the Sistine Chapel with Michelangelo's ceiling, the Raphael Rooms, and ancient Roman sculpture. Most of the museum is accessible to wheelchair users. A barrier-free itinerary avoids stairs, and elevators connect different levels. Free wheelchairs are available to borrow. Disabled visitors and one companion receive free admission and skip-the-line entry.

Getting There

  • Metro: Ottaviano station (Line A) is about 800 meters from the museum entrance. The walk is mostly flat along Via Ottaviano. Cipro station (Line A) is also nearby, about 600 meters away.
  • Bus: Routes 49, 32, 81, and 982 stop near the museum entrance on Viale Vaticano.
  • Tram: Line 19 stops at Piazza del Risorgimento, about a 10-minute roll from the entrance.
  • From St. Peter's Square: The museum entrance on Viale Vaticano is about a 15-minute roll from St. Peter's Square along the Vatican walls. Note that the internal passage from the museums to St. Peter's Basilica (one-way) exists but may not always be accessible.

Wheelchair Accessibility

  • The museum offers a barrier-free visit itinerary. Staff from the Guard Corps assist visitors to reach main services and exhibits without encountering stairs.
  • Elevators connect the different levels of the museum complex. Ramps are installed throughout the accessible route.
  • The Sistine Chapel is accessible by wheelchair via the barrier-free route.
  • Free wheelchair loan is available from the cloakroom at the entrance. You must present a valid ID document as a deposit. Wheelchairs are subject to availability.
  • Disabled visitors with certified disability over 74% receive free entry. One companion also enters free.
  • Skip-the-line priority entry is guaranteed for disabled visitors and their companion. No advance queue is needed.
  • Accessible toilets equipped for wheelchair users are located along the itinerary and at all dining and refreshment points.

The Vatican Museums are extremely crowded, especially from 10:00am to 2:00pm. Narrow corridors can become very congested, making wheelchair navigation difficult. Visit first thing in the morning or on Friday evenings (when open late) for a better experience.

  • The Vatican Gardens are NOT wheelchair accessible due to steep and uneven terrain.
  • Some galleries have narrow doorways that may be tight for larger wheelchairs. Standard-width manual wheelchairs fit through all accessible routes.

Accessible Toilets

Accessible restrooms are available at multiple points along the museum itinerary and at every dining area. They are well signed and maintained.

Tips for Visitors with Disabilities

  • Book tickets online at the official site (tickets.museivaticani.va) up to 60 days in advance. Tickets sell out fast in peak season.
  • Contact the museum in advance to arrange assistance or confirm specific accessibility needs.
  • The full museum route is about 7 kilometers long. This is a very long distance to cover in a wheelchair. Plan rest stops and prioritize which galleries matter most to you.
  • The museum exit leads into St. Peter's Basilica via a one-way passage. Confirm at the entrance desk whether this route is currently accessible.
  • On the last Sunday of the month, admission is free for everyone. Crowds are at their worst on these days, making wheelchair navigation extremely challenging.
  • Bring your own food and water. The museum cafes can be crowded and have limited accessible seating.
  • Photography is allowed in most galleries but not in the Sistine Chapel.
