Fiumicino Airport (FCO)

Leonardo da Vinci-Fiumicino is Italy's largest airport and the main gateway to Rome. It has two connected terminals (Terminal 1 and Terminal 3) that you can walk between in about 5 to 6 minutes. Both terminals are step-free, with elevators, escalators, and automatic doors throughout.

PRM Assistance

PRM (Person with Reduced Mobility) assistance at Fiumicino is managed by ADR Assistance, the official airport operator. The service is free and includes meet-and-greet, wheelchair transport through the terminal, help at check-in and security, and boarding assistance.

How to book PRM assistance:

  1. Contact your airline when you book your flight, or at least 48 hours before departure.
  2. Specify your needs: wheelchair to the gate, boarding help, arrival assistance, or baggage collection.
  3. On arrival, go to the designated PRM meeting point in the arrivals hall. Look for the wheelchair symbol or ask any staff member.
  4. If you did not pre-book, use the assistance call points marked with a blue wheelchair icon. Wait times without a booking can be 20 to 40 minutes.

Terminal Facilities

Both terminals have accessible toilets on every level, marked with the international wheelchair symbol. Check-in counters have lowered sections for wheelchair users. Self-service kiosks are at accessible height.

Security screening includes adapted lanes for wheelchair users. Inform staff if you cannot stand for the scanner, and a seated check will be offered.

Getting to Central Rome from Fiumicino

Fiumicino is about 30 kilometers southwest of Rome's city center. Several transport options are available.

Leonardo Express Train

The fastest and most accessible option. This non-stop train runs from Fiumicino Airport station directly to Roma Termini in 32 minutes. Trains depart every 15 minutes during the day. All carriages have designated wheelchair spaces and level boarding from the platform. The airport train station is connected to the terminal by elevator.

A single ticket costs 14 EUR. Children under 4 travel free, and children aged 4 to 12 travel free with one fare-paying adult. Large luggage has no extra charge.

FL1 Regional Train

A cheaper alternative at about 8 EUR. The FL1 runs from Fiumicino Airport to several Rome stations, including Trastevere and Ostiense, but does not go directly to Termini. Journey time is about 30 to 40 minutes depending on the station. Trains are generally accessible but older rolling stock can have larger gaps between platform and train.

Airport Shuttle Buses

Companies like SIT Bus and Terravision run shuttle buses between Fiumicino and Roma Termini. Prices start at about 7 EUR. However, wheelchair accessibility on these services is inconsistent. Some coaches have luggage holds that can store a folded wheelchair, but no boarding ramp. Contact the company in advance to confirm.

Taxi

Official white taxis charge a fixed fare of 50 EUR from Fiumicino to any address within the Aurelian Walls (the historic center). The ride takes 30 to 50 minutes depending on traffic. Taxis depart from the ground level outside arrivals. Standard taxis can carry a folded manual wheelchair in the trunk, but for a power wheelchair or scooter, you need a wheelchair-accessible vehicle booked in advance. See our Taxis guide for details.

Our Recommendation

The Leonardo Express is the best option from Fiumicino for wheelchair users. It is step-free from terminal to train, runs every 15 minutes, and reaches Roma Termini in 32 minutes for 14 EUR. If you need a wheelchair-accessible vehicle, pre-book a private accessible transfer instead of relying on taxis at the rank.

Ciampino Airport (CIA)

Ciampino is Rome's smaller airport, used mainly by low-cost carriers like Ryanair and Wizz Air. It is about 15 kilometers southeast of the city center.

Accessibility at Ciampino

Ciampino provides PRM assistance through ADR Assistance, the same operator as Fiumicino. Book through your airline at least 48 hours in advance.

The airport has accessible lifts, ramps, tactile paving, and accessible toilets. Disabled parking spaces are located near the terminal entrance. However, Ciampino is a smaller and older facility. Corridors are narrower, and shopping areas are tight. Expect a more basic experience compared to Fiumicino.

Getting to Central Rome from Ciampino

There is no direct train from Ciampino Airport. The most common options are:

  • Shuttle bus: SIT Bus and Terravision run coaches to Roma Termini (about 6 EUR, 40 minutes). Check wheelchair accessibility before booking.
  • Taxi: Fixed fare of 31 EUR to any address within the Aurelian Walls. Same considerations as Fiumicino for wheelchair-accessible vehicles.
  • Private accessible transfer: Pre-bookable vans with ramps. The most reliable option for power wheelchair users arriving at Ciampino.

Service Dogs

Service dogs and guide dogs are welcome at both Fiumicino and Ciampino airports, on the Leonardo Express, and in taxis. No muzzle is required on Italian trains. Relief areas for service dogs are located outside the arrivals areas at both airports.
