Overview
Rome has four metro lines: Line A (orange), Line B (blue), Line B1 (blue branch), and Line C (green). The metro is operated by ATAC. Accessibility varies significantly between lines because they were built in different decades. Line C is the newest and most accessible. Lines A and B are older and have important gaps in accessibility.
All metro stations have tactile paths for visually impaired passengers, display screens for hearing-impaired passengers, and Braille buttons in elevators. Trains on all lines have designated wheelchair spaces near the doors.
Line A (Orange)
Line A opened in 1980 and runs from Battistini in the northwest to Anagnina in the southeast. It passes through several key tourist areas. Many stations have been retrofitted with elevators, but four important stations remain inaccessible to wheelchair users.
Inaccessible Stations on Line A
The following Line A stations do not have elevators or stair lifts connecting the street to the platform:
- Spagna (Spanish Steps) - no lift or stair lift
- Barberini (Trevi Fountain area) - no lift or stair lift
- Repubblica (near Termini) - no lift or stair lift
- Vittorio Emanuele (near Termini) - no lift or stair lift
If you need to reach the Spanish Steps area, consider taking the metro to Flaminio (accessible) and traveling on the surface, or use a bus or taxi instead.
Accessible Stations on Line A
All other Line A stations have elevators. Key accessible stops include:
- Termini - Rome's main station, fully accessible with multiple elevators
- Flaminio - for Piazza del Popolo and Villa Borghese
- Ottaviano - for Vatican Museums and St. Peter's
- Cipro - alternative for Vatican area
- San Giovanni - interchange with Line C
Stair Lifts on Line A
At some stations, ATAC offers a booking service for stair lifts or wheelchair assistance. At Lepanto, Ponte Lungo, and Anagnina stations, a station wheelchair is available for use. To book stair lift assistance, contact ATAC in advance through their website or by phone.
Avoid Spagna, Barberini, Repubblica, and Vittorio Emanuele
These four Line A stations have no elevator access to the platforms. Wheelchair users cannot use these stations. Plan your route using accessible stations and surface transport to reach nearby attractions.
Line B and B1 (Blue)
Line B runs from Laurentina in the south to Rebibbia in the northeast, passing through Termini and the Colosseum area. Line B1 branches off from Bologna station toward Jonio in the north. Line B1 is newer and has better accessibility.
Key Accessible Stations on Line B
- Termini - fully accessible, interchange with Line A
- Colosseo - for the Colosseum and Roman Forum area. Has an elevator.
- Circo Massimo - for Circus Maximus
- Piramide - interchange with Roma Ostiense rail station
- EUR Fermi and EUR Palasport - for the EUR business district
Most Line B stations have elevators, but platform-to-train gaps can be larger than on newer lines. The gap varies by station and can be 8 to 12 centimeters wide and 5 to 10 centimeters deep. Power wheelchairs generally cross the gap without difficulty, but manual wheelchair users may want to ask for help from staff or other passengers.
Line C (Green)
Line C is Rome's newest metro line, with sections opened between 2014 and 2025. It runs from the southeastern suburbs toward the city center. In December 2025, two new stations opened: Colosseo-Fori Imperiali and Porta Metronia.
Line C is fully accessible. Every station has:
- Elevators connecting all levels
- Tactile paths and guidance systems
- Level boarding with minimal platform gaps
- Spacious, modern platforms designed for wheelchair access
Line C is the best metro line for wheelchair users in Rome. If your destination is served by Line C, this should be your first choice.

Real-Time Elevator Status
Elevator breakdowns are common on Lines A and B. Before starting your journey, check the real-time status of station elevators on the ATAC website or the Roma Mobilita app. If an elevator is out of service at your destination, plan an alternative route.
Staff Assistance
If you need help at a metro station, press the blue intercom button on the platform or at the station entrance. ATAC staff can assist with boarding, elevator operation, or finding alternative routes. Metro stations are staffed during operating hours (5:30 to 23:30, until 1:30 on Fridays and Saturdays).
