Overview

Official taxis in Rome are white sedans with a "TAXI" sign on the roof and a meter inside. All licensed taxis display a municipal license number on the door. Rome taxis are regulated by the city, with set fares for airport trips and metered rates for everything else.

Taxis are useful for wheelchair users because Rome's cobblestones, hills, and uneven sidewalks can make long surface journeys difficult. However, wheelchair-accessible vehicles (WAVs) are limited in number and must be booked in advance.

Wheelchair-Accessible Vehicles (WAVs)

Rome has a small fleet of wheelchair-accessible taxis operated by Cooperativa Radiotaxi 3570. These are specially equipped vans with a rear ramp or hydraulic lift that can carry a passenger seated in their wheelchair. The wheelchair is secured with straps and locking points inside the vehicle.

WAVs are not available for street hailing. You must always book them in advance.

How to Book a WAV

By phone:

  • Radiotaxi 3570: Call 06 3570 and ask for a "taxi accessibile" (accessible taxi). Available 24 hours.
  • Radiotaxi 063570 app: Download the 3570 app to book directly, including the option for an accessible vehicle.

Other dispatch numbers:

  • 060609 (Rome municipal info line, can connect you to taxi dispatch)
  • 06 6645 (Samarcanda cooperative)

Give at least 1 to 2 hours of advance notice. For airport trips, book the day before if possible.

Book WAVs Early

Wheelchair-accessible taxis are very limited in Rome. For airport transfers, train station trips, or scheduled tours, book at least a day in advance. Same-day requests may require a long wait or may not be available.

Standard Taxis

Standard Rome taxis (white sedans) work for wheelchair users who can transfer to a car seat. The driver should help load a folded manual wheelchair into the trunk. Most sedan trunks fit a standard manual wheelchair but not a power wheelchair or mobility scooter.

Before getting in, confirm with the driver that your wheelchair fits. If you have a larger chair, you will need a WAV or a private accessible transfer van.

Fixed Fares

Rome has fixed taxi fares for trips between the airports and the city center (anywhere within the Aurelian Walls).

RouteFixed Fare
Fiumicino Airport to/from city center50 EUR
Ciampino Airport to/from city center31 EUR

These fixed fares include luggage and up to 4 passengers. The fare is the same regardless of traffic. Make sure the driver uses the fixed fare and does not run the meter for airport trips.

Metered Fares

For trips within the city, taxis use a meter. Rome taxi rates are regulated:

  • Minimum fare: 3 EUR
  • Weekday base rate: Starting fare depends on time and day
  • Supplements: Small surcharges apply for night travel (after 10 pm), Sundays, and holidays

A typical taxi ride within the historic center costs 8 to 15 EUR. A ride from Termini to Trastevere costs about 10 to 12 EUR.

There is no extra charge for using a WAV. Accessible taxis use the same meter rates as standard taxis.

Where to Find Taxis

Official taxi ranks are located at:

  • Roma Termini station (front entrance, Piazza dei Cinquecento)
  • Roma Tiburtina station
  • Piazza Venezia
  • Piazza di Spagna
  • Largo Argentina
  • Piazza del Popolo

Do not accept rides from unlicensed drivers who approach you inside stations or airports. Always use the official taxi rank or book by phone.

Ride-Hailing Apps

Free Now: Available in Rome for booking licensed taxis through the app. You can request a standard or accessible vehicle, though WAV availability through the app is limited.

Uber: Uber operates in Rome, but only UberBlack (licensed chauffeur cars). There is no UberX or UberPool. Uber vehicles in Rome are not reliably wheelchair accessible. Standard Uber cars are sedans and unlikely to fit a power wheelchair.

For guaranteed accessible transport, use Radiotaxi 3570 or a private accessible transfer company rather than Uber.

Private Accessible Transfers

For the most reliable wheelchair-accessible transport in Rome, consider private transfer companies that specialize in accessible vehicles. These companies operate vans equipped with ramps, tie-down systems, and space for power wheelchairs and mobility scooters.

Private transfers are especially useful for:

  • Airport pickups and drop-offs
  • Day trips to Pompeii, Ostia Antica, or the Castelli Romani
  • Cruise port transfers to and from Civitavecchia

Book through your hotel concierge or search for "trasporto accessibile Roma" online. Prices are higher than standard taxis but include guaranteed accessibility.

Confirm Vehicle Size

When booking any taxi or transfer, tell the dispatcher the type and size of your wheelchair (manual, power, or scooter) and whether you will remain seated in it during travel. This ensures they send a vehicle that fits your equipment.

Tipping

Tipping taxi drivers in Rome is not required, but rounding up to the nearest euro is appreciated. If the driver helped with your wheelchair or luggage, a tip of 1 to 3 EUR is a kind gesture.
