Mostly Accessible

Overview

Yoyogi Park is one of Tokyo's largest public parks, covering 54 hectares in the Shibuya ward. The park is mostly flat with wide, paved main paths that are suitable for wheelchair users. It is a popular spot for picnics, jogging, cycling, and weekend events. The park sits adjacent to Meiji Shrine (Meiji Jingu) and is within walking distance of Harajuku and Shibuya. The main paved paths and open lawns are accessible, though some forested areas have unpaved trails with gravel or dirt surfaces that may be difficult for wheelchairs.

Getting There

  • JR Yamanote Line - Harajuku Station: Use the Omotesando Exit (the accessible exit with elevator). The park's main entrance on the eastern side is about a 3-minute wheel from the station. The route is flat and paved.
  • Tokyo Metro - Meiji-jingumae Station (Chiyoda/Fukutoshin Lines): Elevator access available. Exit 2 or 3 will bring you close to the park entrance. About a 5-minute walk.
  • Tokyo Metro - Yoyogi-koen Station (Chiyoda Line): This station is on the western side of the park. It has elevator access. The park's west gate is nearby.
  • By bus: Accessible buses serve stops near the park on Meiji-dori and Inokashira-dori.

The main park entrance on the eastern side (near Harajuku Station) is the easiest starting point. From here, you can access the central open lawn, the fountain area, and the paved perimeter path without encountering any steps or steep slopes.

Wheelchair Accessibility

Main Paths

The park has a network of wide, paved paths that loop through the grounds. The main paths are 3-4 meters wide, flat, and made of smooth asphalt or concrete. These paths connect the major areas of the park: the central fountain plaza, the open event space, the forested areas, and the cycling course. Wheelchair users can comfortably complete a full loop of the park on the paved perimeter path.

Central Area

The central section of the park features a large open lawn surrounded by paved paths. This is where most visitors gather for picnics and relaxation. The lawn itself is natural grass, which may be soft or uneven in places. The paved paths around the lawn provide access to all sides.

Fountain Plaza

The fountain plaza near the park's center is fully paved and flat. It is one of the main gathering points and has benches along the edges. Weekend events often set up in this area.

Forested Sections

The wooded areas in the northern and western parts of the park have a mix of paved and unpaved paths. Unpaved paths include compacted dirt and gravel surfaces. After rain, these paths can become muddy and difficult for wheelchairs. Stick to the main paved paths for reliable access.

Cycling Course

The park has a dedicated 1.8-kilometer cycling course that is fully paved and flat. While it is designed for cyclists, wheelchair users can also use this path (be aware of bicycle traffic). The Cycling Center near the park's southwest corner rents bicycles (including tandem bikes) from 9:00am to 4:30pm, closed Mondays. Bicycle rental costs approximately 100-210 yen per hour.

Accessible Toilets

Yoyogi Park has several accessible toilet facilities:

  • Near the main entrance (east side): Accessible public toilet with grab rails and adequate space. Well-maintained.
  • Central area near the fountain: Accessible toilet available. Includes handrails and wheelchair space.
  • Near the cycling center (southwest): Accessible toilet.
  • Yoyogi-Hachiman area (west side): Modern accessible toilets that blend into the park's forested setting. Equipped with features for elderly visitors and parents.

All accessible toilets in the park have grab rails and emergency call functions. Maintenance is generally good, though outdoor park toilets may not match the standard of indoor facilities.

There are also accessible restrooms inside the nearby NHK Studio Park and at Meiji Jingu shrine's Restaurant Yoyogi, which has a spacious accessible restroom.

Tips for Visitors with Disabilities

  • Cherry blossom season. Yoyogi Park is one of Tokyo's top cherry blossom viewing spots (late March to early April). During this time, the park gets very crowded, particularly on weekends. The paved paths remain accessible, but maneuvering through groups of picnickers on the lawn areas may be difficult.
  • Weekend events. The park hosts festivals, flea markets, and cultural events on weekends. Events are usually held in the central area or the event plaza near the NHK side. Check what is happening before your visit, as events can affect crowding and path access.
  • Meiji Shrine. The entrance to Meiji Jingu shrine is adjacent to the park. The main approach to the shrine is a wide gravel path (about 700 meters long). The gravel is compacted but can be challenging for some wheelchairs, especially after rain. The shrine buildings have ramps for access. Allow 30-60 minutes for the shrine visit.
  • Drinking water. Water fountains and vending machines are located along the main paths throughout the park.
  • Rest areas. Benches are placed regularly along all paved paths. The park also has covered rest shelters near the major toilet facilities.
  • Dogs and children. Yoyogi Park is popular with dog walkers and families. The dog run area is fenced and separate from the main paths.
  • Best combination. Yoyogi Park pairs well with Harajuku's Omotesando avenue for a half-day outing. Start at the park in the morning, then wheel to Omotesando for lunch and shopping.
