Why Rent in Tokyo?
Renting mobility equipment locally avoids airline damage risks, oversized baggage fees, and the difficulty of transporting heavy equipment through airports and train stations. Tokyo has several rental companies that cater specifically to international tourists, with English-language websites and hotel delivery.
Book Early
Unlike some countries where you can rent mobility equipment on short notice, most Japanese rental companies require advance reservations. Book at least 1 to 2 weeks before your arrival for manual wheelchairs, and 2 to 4 weeks ahead for power wheelchairs or mobility scooters. During peak tourist seasons (cherry blossom season in late March to mid-April, and autumn foliage season in November), demand is high.

Equipment Types and Pricing
Prices vary by company, equipment type, and rental duration. The following table shows approximate rates.
| Equipment | Daily Rate | Weekly Rate | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Manual wheelchair | 1,500 to 3,000 yen | 7,000 to 15,000 yen | Folding, lightweight models. Japanese models tend to be narrower. |
| Power wheelchair | 4,000 to 10,000 yen | 20,000 to 50,000 yen | Charger included. Check voltage compatibility. |
| Mobility scooter | 3,000 to 8,000 yen | 15,000 to 40,000 yen | Compact models recommended for Tokyo's tight spaces. |
| Rollator / walker | 500 to 1,500 yen | 2,000 to 7,000 yen | Folding models available. |
Japanese Wheelchair Sizes
An important consideration: Japanese wheelchairs tend to be narrower than Western models. Standard Japanese manual wheelchairs typically have seat widths of 38 to 42 cm (15 to 16.5 inches), compared to 43 to 50 cm (17 to 20 inches) for standard Western wheelchairs.
This can be an advantage in Tokyo, where doorways, train aisles, elevator doors, and restaurant spaces can be tight. However, if you need a wider seat, specify your required seat width when booking. Some rental companies stock wider models, but availability is limited.
For power wheelchairs and scooters, check the overall width. Tokyo Metro and Toei Subway elevator doors are typically 80 to 90 cm wide. Standard ticket gate wheelchair passages are about 90 cm wide. Ensure your equipment will fit.
Delivery and Pickup
Most rental companies deliver directly to your hotel:
- Hotel delivery: Typically included in the rental price or costs an additional 1,000 to 3,000 yen depending on distance.
- Airport delivery: Available from some companies. The equipment will be waiting at a designated meeting point in the arrival area. Coordinate the exact location and time in advance.
- Return: Most companies pick up the equipment from your hotel. Coordinate the pickup time, especially if your checkout is early morning. Some companies accept drop-offs at airport locations.
Inform Your Hotel
Let your hotel know in advance that a wheelchair or mobility equipment delivery is expected. Provide the delivery company's name and estimated delivery date. Japanese hotels are accustomed to receiving packages for incoming guests, but advance notice ensures smooth handling.
Free Wheelchairs at Attractions
If you only need a wheelchair for specific visits, several Tokyo attractions lend wheelchairs for free:
- Tokyo National Museum (Ueno) - Wheelchairs available at the entrance.
- Senso-ji Temple (Asakusa) - Wheelchairs upon request at the temple office.
- Tokyo Skytree - Wheelchairs available at the ticket counter.
- Shinjuku Gyoen - Wheelchairs available at the entrance gates.
- Major department stores - Most department stores (Isetan, Mitsukoshi, Takashimaya) lend wheelchairs at the information desk.
These are first-come, first-served and cannot be taken outside the venue. They are useful for single visits but not a substitute for a rental if you need mobility support throughout your trip.
