Fully Accessible

Overview

The MuseumsQuartier (MQ) is one of the world's largest cultural complexes, housed in the former Imperial Stables. It spans 60,000 square meters and contains major museums, event spaces, cafes, and shops. The three anchor institutions are the Leopold Museum (Austrian art including a major Egon Schiele collection), mumok (Museum of Modern Art Ludwig Foundation Vienna), and Kunsthalle Wien (contemporary art).

The entire MQ area has been made barrier-free with step-free access to all institutions, wheelchair-accessible elevators, and barrier-free restrooms. Wheelchairs can be borrowed free of charge at the MQ Point information desk near the main entrance. Four disabled parking spaces are available on-site.

Getting There

  • U-Bahn: Museumsquartier (U2) exits directly into the MQ complex. Volkstheater (U2, U3) is a 3-minute roll. Both stations have elevators.
  • Bus: Route 48A stops at Volkstheater, adjacent to the MQ.
  • Accessible entrance: The main entrance is at the corner facing Volkstheater (Museumsplatz 1). This entrance provides the most direct access to the disabled parking and the MQ Point information desk. All paths from the entrance into the complex are step-free.

Wheelchair Accessibility

  • MQ grounds: All paths within the complex are step-free. The courtyard areas are paved and flat.
  • Leopold Museum: Barrier-free access with two elevators (90 cm door width). All exhibition floors are accessible.
  • mumok: Barrier-free access with three elevators (152 x 90 cm). Barrier-free toilets at all restroom locations. Ladies' accessible toilet at the mumok cafe and cloakroom. Gender-neutral accessible toilet on levels -2 and 5 (mumok Lounge).
  • Kunsthalle Wien: Barrier-free access with elevator to all levels.
  • Wheelchair loan: Free wheelchairs at the MQ Point by the main entrance, daily 10:00am-7:00pm. Leave a form of ID as deposit.
  • Parking: Four disabled parking spaces on-site, accessible via the main entrance. Free of charge with a disabled badge for the duration of your visit. Two additional paid spaces in the Contipark car park in front of MQ (entrance via Museumsplatz 1).

The MQ courtyard is a popular gathering spot in summer, with outdoor furniture and cafes. The furniture is movable, so wheelchair users can navigate easily. In winter, the courtyard hosts seasonal markets.

Accessible Toilets

Barrier-free restrooms are available both in the individual museums and at the main entrance to the MQ. Each museum has its own accessible toilets on multiple levels. The most convenient is the restroom near the MQ Point at the main entrance.

Tips for Visitors with Disabilities

  • The MQ grounds are open 24 hours and free to enter. You only pay admission to the individual museums.
  • mumok offers reduced admission (15 EUR instead of 18 EUR) for visitors with disabilities on presentation of a valid ID. Under 19 enters free.
  • The Leopold Museum is the home of the world's largest Egon Schiele collection, with 42 paintings and 187 works on paper.
  • A combined ticket for mumok and Leopold Museum costs 33 EUR (29 EUR reduced), available only at the mumok ticket counter.
  • The MQ has several cafes and restaurants at ground level with outdoor seating. The Glacis Beisl and Cafe Leopold are both accessible.
  • The complex can feel confusing at first. Pick up a free map at MQ Point and ask staff for directions to your chosen museum.
  • Thursday evenings (museums open until 9:00pm) are the best time for a quieter visit with more space in the galleries.
  • The MQ is directly adjacent to the Kunsthistorisches Museum and Natural History Museum on Maria-Theresien-Platz, making it easy to combine visits in one day.
  • Kunsthalle Wien shows contemporary art with regularly changing exhibitions. It is the smallest of the three main MQ museums and can be visited in about 45 minutes.
  • The Leopold Museum building has a distinctive white limestone exterior. Its collection also includes works by Gustav Klimt, Oskar Kokoschka, and Richard Gerstl.
  • mumok (Museum of Modern Art) holds Austria's largest collection of modern and contemporary art, with works by Warhol, Picasso, Yoko Ono, and others.
  • The MQ also hosts dance, theater, and music performances at venues like Tanzquartier Wien and Halle E+G. Check individual venue accessibility before attending.
  • Free WiFi is available throughout the MQ courtyard and most indoor areas.
  • For accessibility questions, contact the MQ Point information desk at +43 1 523 58 81 or email [email protected].
  • Service dogs are permitted in all MQ venues.
  • The MQ is built in the former Imperial Stables from the 18th century, combined with modern architecture. The contrast between Baroque and contemporary buildings is striking.
  • In summer, the MQ courtyard hosts outdoor film screenings and cultural events. Check the MQ website for the current schedule.
