Mostly Accessible

Overview

Schoenbrunn Palace is Vienna's most-visited attraction, a 1,441-room Baroque residence that served as the summer home of the Habsburg dynasty. The palace and its gardens are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Today, visitors can tour 40 state rooms decorated with Rococo furnishings, frescoes, and gilded details. The grounds cover about 1.2 square kilometers and include the Gloriette hilltop structure, the Privy Garden, a maze, the Orangery, and the world's oldest zoo (Tiergarten Schoenbrunn, founded 1752).

The palace interior is barrier-free. All display rooms are accessible via ramps or a freight elevator large enough for extra-wide wheelchairs (door width 160 cm, cabin depth 220 cm, cabin width 156 cm). Free wheelchair loans are available at the main entrance. However, some outdoor areas have stairs with no alternative route, including the Gloriette viewing terrace, the Privy Garden, and the maze viewing platform. The palace receives about 4 million visitors per year, so timing your visit is important for a comfortable wheelchair experience.

Getting There

  • U-Bahn: Schoenbrunn station (U4) has elevator access to street level. From the station exit, the palace main gate is a 5-minute roll along a flat, paved path.
  • Tram: Tram 10, 58, or 60 to Schoenbrunn stop. The stop is within sight of the main gate.
  • Accessible entrance: The main entrance is the most convenient for wheelchair users. Three disabled parking spaces are located in the forecourt near the main gate. A ramp leads from the forecourt directly into the display rooms.

Wheelchair Accessibility

  • All display rooms in the palace are step-free, connected by ramps and a large freight elevator. There are no steps inside the exhibition route.
  • Free wheelchair loans are available at the turnstile upon deposit of an ID. Park wheelchairs (for outdoor use) are also available at the main gate.
  • The Children's Museum on the ground floor is fully accessible.
  • The palace gardens are accessible via a ramp to the right of the palace (as seen from the parade court). Paths in the main garden area are gravel but generally firm and flat.
  • The Tiergarten Schoenbrunn (zoo) has made significant accessibility improvements, with paved paths and ramps at most enclosures.

The Gloriette viewing terrace, Privy Garden, maze viewing platform, and Privy Garden arcade are only accessible by stairs. There is no step-free route to these areas. You can view the Gloriette from the garden paths below, but the terrace itself requires climbing steps.

Accessible Toilets

Barrier-free toilets are located in three areas: near the ticket desk (ground floor), inside the Children's Museum, and on the first floor. The first-floor toilet requires staff assistance to access, so ask at the information desk before heading upstairs. All accessible toilets have grab rails, emergency pull cords, and sufficient turning space for a standard wheelchair. The ground-floor toilet near the ticket desk is the easiest to find and does not require assistance.

Tips for Visitors with Disabilities

  • Reduced admission is available with a valid disability ID. Ask at the ticket desk, as the discount is not available online.
  • One companion enters free when listed on the wheelchair user's disability ID.
  • Assistance dogs are permitted throughout the palace and grounds.
  • Sign language video guides are available for the palace tour.
  • The palace cafe (Residenz) on the ground floor is step-free with space for wheelchairs between tables.
  • Plan at least 2 hours for the palace interior. Add another 1 to 2 hours if you want to explore the gardens.
  • Weekday mornings are the quietest time to visit. Summer weekends and holidays bring large crowds that can make wheelchair navigation more difficult in the narrow state rooms.
  • The gravel paths in the garden can be tiring for manual wheelchair users over long distances. The flat, paved route along the central axis is the easiest path.
  • If you plan to visit the zoo, it has a separate entrance and admission. The zoo paths are largely paved and most animal enclosures have ramps or level access.
  • The Orangery Garden and Crown Prince Garden each have a separate 5 EUR admission. Both have some stepped areas, so ask at the ticket desk about current wheelchair accessibility before buying.
  • Contact the palace for accessibility questions at +43 1 811 13-239 or [email protected].
  • The palace offers two main tour options: the "Imperial Tour" (22 rooms, about 30-40 minutes) and the "Grand Tour" (40 rooms, about 50-60 minutes). Both routes are barrier-free.
  • There is a gift shop on the ground floor with step-free access. It sells souvenirs, books, and reproductions of imperial items.
  • The "Sisi Ticket" (57 EUR) combines Schoenbrunn Palace with the Hofburg Sisi Museum. If you plan to visit both, this combination saves money.
  • The nearest accessible cafe outside the palace grounds is the Cafe Dommayer on Auhofstrasse, a 5-minute roll from the main gate. It has step-free entry and is a traditional Viennese coffeehouse.
  • Consider visiting the Schoenbrunn Zoo on a separate day. The zoo alone requires 2-3 hours and has its own accessible entrance and facilities.
  • The palace audio guide is available in multiple languages and included with the palace ticket. It can be used from a seated position.
  • The freight elevator used for wheelchair access is the largest in the palace (cabin width 156 cm, depth 220 cm, door width 160 cm). Even the widest power wheelchairs should fit comfortably.
