Overview

The Spanish Riding School (Spanische Hofreitschule) is one of Vienna's most iconic cultural institutions, dedicated to the classical art of Lipizzaner dressage. Founded in 1572, it is the oldest riding school in the world where classical horsemanship is still practiced. Performances and morning exercises take place in the baroque Winter Riding School hall within the Hofburg Palace complex. The venue is step-free and has designated wheelchair viewing spaces. However, wheelchair places are limited and must be reserved in advance by contacting the school directly. Accessible restrooms are available in the visitor center.

Getting There

  • U-Bahn: Herrengasse (U3) is the closest station, about a 3-minute roll to Michaelerplatz. Stephansplatz (U1, U3) is about an 8-minute roll west. Both stations have elevator access.
  • Tram: Lines 1, 2, and D stop near the Hofburg area on the Ringstrasse.
  • Bus: Route 2A stops at Michaelerplatz, directly at the entrance.
  • Accessible parking: Disabled parking spaces are available in the Hofburg inner courtyard. Check availability and access procedures when booking your wheelchair space.
  • On foot from the city center: From Stephansplatz, roll west along Kohlmarkt (a flat, pedestrianized shopping street) for about 5 minutes to reach Michaelerplatz.

Wheelchair Accessibility

  • The venue is step-free throughout the public areas, with ramps and accessible paths leading to the Winter Riding School hall.
  • Designated wheelchair viewing spaces are available in the Winter Riding School for performances, morning exercises, and guided tours.
  • Wheelchair spaces are limited. You must contact the school in advance at [email protected] to request a wheelchair spot. A written confirmation from the school is required for a binding reservation.
  • The visitor center at Michaelerplatz 1 has a wheelchair-accessible entrance.
  • Accessible restrooms are located in the visitor center.
  • The approach from Michaelerplatz is flat and paved with cobblestones. The cobblestones are relatively smooth but may be uncomfortable over longer distances.

You must book wheelchair spaces in advance by emailing [email protected]. Do not show up without a confirmed wheelchair reservation, as spaces are very limited and cannot be guaranteed on the day. Book as early as possible, especially for weekend performances.

Accessible Toilets

  • A wheelchair-accessible toilet is located in the visitor center at Michaelerplatz 1.
  • Inside the Hofburg complex, additional accessible restrooms may be available depending on which areas are open to visitors.
  • The nearest public accessible toilet outside the venue is at the Herrengasse U-Bahn station area.

Tips for Visitors

  • Morning exercises (Tuesday to Friday) offer a more relaxed atmosphere than full performances and cost less (from 17 EUR). You watch the riders and horses training to classical Viennese music. The experience lasts about 2 hours, but you can leave at any time.
  • Full performances (check schedule on srs.at) are more formal and choreographed, starting from 26 EUR. These tend to sell out quickly, so book well in advance.
  • Guided tours of the Winter Riding School and stables are also available. These are accessible and provide historical background on the Lipizzaner tradition.
  • Photography rules vary by event type. Check current policies when booking.
  • The Hofburg area around the school is flat and has many other accessible attractions, including the Imperial Apartments, the Sisi Museum, and the Imperial Treasury. You can combine several into one visit.
  • Kohlmarkt, the pedestrianized street leading to Michaelerplatz from Stephansplatz, is lined with luxury shops and has a smooth, flat surface ideal for wheelchair rolling.
  • If you cannot secure a wheelchair space for a performance, the morning exercises are usually easier to get into and still provide a memorable experience with the Lipizzaner horses.
  • The cafe Demel on Kohlmarkt is a famous Viennese patisserie with step-free access, a good stop before or after your visit.
  • The Lipizzaner horses are a breed dating back to the 16th century, originally bred for the Habsburg royalty. The white horses you see in performances are actually born dark and gradually lighten over 6 to 10 years.
  • The Winter Riding School hall itself is a baroque masterpiece, with a gallery supported by 46 columns. Even if horses are not performing, the architecture is worth seeing on a guided tour.
  • Performances typically last about 90 minutes. Morning exercises last about 2 hours. Both are held in the same hall.
  • The gift shop at the visitor center has accessible entry and sells Lipizzaner-themed souvenirs, books, and DVDs.
  • The Hofburg complex around the school is large. If combining multiple Hofburg attractions, plan your route to minimize backtracking. The visitor center staff can suggest an accessible itinerary through the complex.
  • In summer, Lipizzaner horses from the school are taken to their summer pasture in Heldenberg (Lower Austria). Check the calendar to confirm horses are present in Vienna during your visit.
  • The Spanish Riding School gets its name not from Spain, but from the Spanish horses that were originally used. The Lipizzaner breed traces its origins to the Spanish, Arabian, and Berber horses brought to Austria in the 16th century.
  • Tickets for all events can be purchased online at srs.at or at the ticket counter at Michaelerplatz 1. The ticket counter has step-free access.
