Fully Accessible

Overview

The Stadtpark (City Park) is Vienna's first public park, opened in 1862. It covers about 65,000 square meters along the Wien River between the Ringstrasse and Landstrasser Hauptstrasse. The park is best known for its golden Johann Strauss II monument, one of the most photographed statues in Vienna. With flat terrain, wide paved paths, and ramps replacing stairs at key entrances, the Stadtpark is fully accessible for wheelchair users. The park also houses several other monuments to Viennese composers and artists, as well as the Kursalon concert hall and the Steirereck restaurant, one of Austria's top dining venues.

Getting There

  • U-Bahn: Stadtpark station (U4) has elevator access and exits directly into the park's southern section. This is the most convenient stop.
  • Tram: Lines 2 and 71 stop at Weihburggasse or Am Heumarkt, both adjacent to the park entrances.
  • Walking from the city center: The park is a 5-minute roll from Karlsplatz along the Ringstrasse. The sidewalks are flat and paved the entire way.
  • From the Opera House: Head east along the Ring for about 800 meters on flat pavement to reach the park's northwestern entrance.

Wheelchair Accessibility

  • All main paths through the park are paved with smooth asphalt or stone and are 2 to 4 meters wide.
  • The terrain is completely flat throughout the park. There are no hills or significant slopes.
  • Ramps are available at key entrance points, replacing any steps that existed previously.
  • The Johann Strauss monument is located in the center of the park and is reachable via paved paths from all directions. The viewing area around the statue is flat and open.
  • Benches are placed at regular intervals along all main paths, typically every 50 to 100 meters.
  • The Wien River runs through the park, with flat paved paths on both banks. Bridge crossings within the park are step-free.
  • The Kursalon (concert hall) on the northern edge has step-free access at ground level.

For the best photo of the Johann Strauss monument, visit in the morning when the golden statue catches the eastern light. The path to the monument is flat from every direction, so you can easily circle it to find the best angle.

Accessible Toilets

  • A public accessible toilet is located near the Kursalon building on the park's northern edge.
  • The Steirereck restaurant (located within the park) has wheelchair-accessible bathrooms for diners.
  • The Stadtpark U-Bahn station has toilet facilities.

Tips for Visitors

  • The park is free and open 24 hours. No tickets or reservations are needed.
  • The Johann Strauss monument is the park's highlight, but also look for statues of Franz Schubert, Anton Bruckner, and other composers as you roll through.
  • The Kursalon hosts daily Strauss and Mozart concerts. Check their website for evening performance schedules. The venue has step-free access.
  • Steirereck im Stadtpark is one of Austria's best restaurants and is wheelchair accessible, including the bathrooms. Reservations are essential and should be made weeks in advance.
  • The park is well-lit along main paths and safe for evening visits.
  • In spring and summer, the flower beds along the paths are at their best. The park's landscape design includes accessible viewing areas near all major plantings.
  • The park connects directly to the Ringstrasse, making it easy to combine with a roll along the boulevard. From the park's northwestern exit, you are steps away from the Ring.
  • Dogs are common in the park. Stay on the main paths if you want to avoid the off-leash areas.
  • The park has a children's playground in the eastern section. While designed for children, it has flat paved surroundings that are easy to navigate.
  • Water fountains are available at several locations during the warmer months.
  • The Wien River path through the park connects to a longer cycling and walking route that extends east through the city. The path surface is paved the entire way.
  • In winter, the paths are generally cleared of snow and ice, though conditions may vary after heavy snowfall. Main routes receive priority clearing.
  • The Stadtpark U-Bahn station (U4) is one of the original Otto Wagner-designed stations, with its distinctive Jugendstil architecture visible from the platform.
  • The park hosts occasional outdoor concerts and events in summer. These are free and take place on flat ground near the Kursalon.
  • For photographers, the park offers multiple angles on the Johann Strauss monument. The arch behind the statue provides a natural frame for the golden figure.
  • The park is divided by the Wien River into two sections. Both sides have paved paths, and the bridges within the park are step-free.
