Partially Accessible

Overview

The Vienna State Opera (Wiener Staatsoper) is one of the world's leading opera houses, staging over 300 performances per season. Built in 1869, the neo-Renaissance building was heavily damaged in World War II and rebuilt in 1955. It hosts opera, ballet, and orchestral concerts in a grand auditorium seating around 1,700.

Due to the historic structure of the building, the Vienna State Opera does not offer ideal conditions for wheelchair accessibility. However, it provides 22 dedicated wheelchair spaces (4 in the stalls, 18 in the gallery), accessible via an inclined elevator and a gallery elevator. First-time wheelchair users must register with the order office before booking. Guided tours of the building are not wheelchair accessible.

Getting There

  • U-Bahn: Karlsplatz (U1, U2, U4) has elevator access. The opera house is a 3-minute roll from the station exit on Opernring.
  • Tram: Tram 1, 2, D, or 62 to Oper/Karlsplatz stop. The stop is directly in front of the building.
  • Accessible entrance: The barrier-free entrance is on the Herbert-von-Karajan-Platz side, at the beginning of the arcades. The entrance has a swinging door, 87 cm wide. From here you can reach the stalls or the gallery elevator via the inclined elevator in the opera foyer, near the opera cafe.

Wheelchair Accessibility

  • There are 22 wheelchair spaces: 4 in the stalls (at the height of rows 1 and 14, left and right sides) and 18 in the gallery.
  • Folding companion seats are attached to the auditorium wall next to the wheelchair spaces. In the stalls, they are at the height of rows 15-17. In the gallery, they are directly behind the wheelchair spaces.
  • An inclined elevator in the foyer provides access to the stalls level.
  • A gallery elevator (width 95 cm, depth 140 cm, door clearance 80 cm) provides access to the upper level.
  • Checkrooms and break buffets are available on both levels.
  • Service dogs are welcome.

First-time wheelchair users must register with the Vienna State Opera order office before booking tickets. Contact the order office at +43 1 513 1 513 or visit in person. After registration, you can book wheelchair spaces for future performances. Guided tours are not wheelchair accessible as they traverse multiple floors of the historic building.

Accessible Toilets

Wheelchair-accessible toilets are located on both the stalls level and the gallery level, near the checkrooms and break buffets.

Tips for Visitors with Disabilities

  • Plan ahead. Register with the order office well before your desired performance date. Popular performances sell out wheelchair spaces quickly.
  • The swinging door at the accessible entrance is 87 cm wide. If your wheelchair is wider, contact the opera house in advance.
  • The gallery elevator door clearance is 80 cm. Measure your wheelchair width before booking gallery seats.
  • Arrive at least 30 minutes before the performance to allow time for navigating the building and using the elevators.
  • The stalls wheelchair spaces (4 seats) offer better sightlines than the gallery spaces. Request stalls if available.
  • Standing room tickets are not suitable for wheelchair users. Only the dedicated wheelchair spaces provide appropriate viewing positions and space.
  • The opera cafe on the ground level is accessible and a good place to wait before the performance.
  • Subtitles in German and English are displayed above the stage for most performances.
  • The opera season runs from September to June. Summer months have fewer performances.
  • Dress code is smart casual for regular performances. There is no strict dress code, but most audience members dress up.
  • The Vienna State Opera building itself is an architectural landmark. Even if you cannot attend a performance, the exterior on Opernring is worth seeing.
  • The nearby Albertina Museum (3-minute roll) and Hofburg Palace (5-minute roll) are accessible attractions that pair well with an evening at the opera.
  • For all accessibility questions and wheelchair space bookings, contact the order office at +43 1 513 1 513 during business hours. Email is also accepted at [email protected].
  • If the Vienna State Opera accessibility does not meet your needs, the Theater an der Wien (U4 Karlsplatz) also offers accessible wheelchair spaces and may have more modern facilities.
  • Service dogs are welcome in the auditorium. Notify the order office when booking.
  • The opera building is directly on the Ringstrasse, Vienna's grand boulevard. The sidewalk in front is flat and wide, with good views of the facade.
  • During the opera season, large screens outside the building sometimes broadcast live performances for free. These can be watched from wheelchair level on the sidewalk.
