Why Connectivity Matters
Reliable mobile data is especially important for wheelchair users in Vienna. You will need it for navigation apps (Google Maps, Apple Maps) to find accessible routes, real-time public transport information (Wiener Linien app), checking elevator status at U-Bahn stations, ride-hailing services (Uber, Bolt), and translating signs or menus with your phone camera.
Austrian Mobile Networks
Austria has three major mobile network operators, all with strong coverage in Vienna and across the country:
- A1 Telekom Austria - The largest Austrian network. Best overall coverage, including alpine and rural areas. Strongest 5G rollout in Vienna.
- Magenta (T-Mobile Austria) - Strong urban coverage and competitive pricing. Good data speeds in Vienna.
- Drei (3) - Good value plans with solid coverage in Vienna and most populated areas.
All three networks offer 4G and 5G coverage throughout Vienna. For tourist stays, any of these networks will work well in the city.
Prepaid SIM Cards
Prepaid SIM cards are available without a contract and work in any unlocked phone. You will need your passport or ID for registration (Austrian law requires SIM card registration).
Where to Buy
- Vienna International Airport - A1, Magenta, and Drei all have kiosks or shops in the arrivals area. You can buy a SIM card immediately after clearing customs.
- City center stores - Each network has branded shops in central Vienna. A1 and Magenta stores are on Mariahilfer Strasse and Kärntner Strasse.
- Electronics stores - MediaMarkt (Wien Mitte, Donauzentrum) and Saturn sell prepaid SIM cards from all major networks.
- Supermarkets - Hofer (Aldi), Billa, and Spar sell prepaid SIM cards at the checkout. HoT (Hofer's brand, using the Magenta network) offers very competitive rates starting at 5.90 euros for 8 GB.

EU Roaming
Any SIM card or eSIM purchased in Austria works across 30+ EU/EEA countries at no extra charge. Data, calls, and texts function the same as in Austria. This is useful if your trip includes Germany, Hungary, the Czech Republic, or other nearby countries.
eSIM Options
If your phone supports eSIM (most phones from 2020 onward), you can set up an Austrian data plan before you leave home. No physical SIM card needed. Just scan a QR code and activate.
Popular eSIM Providers
| Provider | Data | Approximate Price | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Airalo | 1 GB - 20 GB | 5 - 26 USD | Data only. Wide range of plans. Popular with travelers. |
| Holafly | Unlimited | 19 - 47 EUR | Unlimited data plans for 5-30 days. No calls or texts. |
| Nomad | 1 GB - 10 GB | 4 - 20 USD | Data only. Europe-wide plans available. |

Set Up Before You Fly
Download and activate your eSIM while you still have WiFi at home. This way you are connected the moment you land at Vienna Airport. Most eSIM apps let you purchase and install the profile in advance and activate it when you arrive.
