Vienna's Major Train Stations
Vienna has several train stations. The three most important for travelers are Wien Hauptbahnhof (central station), Wien Mitte, and Wien Westbahnhof.
Wien Hauptbahnhof (Vienna Central Station)
Wien Hauptbahnhof opened in 2014 and was designed with full accessibility from the start. It is the main hub for domestic and international trains.
- All platforms are wheelchair accessible with elevators at both ends of each platform.
- The station has 14 elevators and 29 escalators connecting all levels.
- Accessible toilets are available on the main concourse.
- Shops and restaurants are at concourse level with step-free access.
- The station connects directly to U-Bahn line U1 (Suedtiroler Platz station) via elevator.
Wien Mitte
Wien Mitte is a mid-sized station in the 3rd District that serves the CAT (City Airport Train), S-Bahn lines, and U-Bahn lines U3 and U4. All platforms have elevator access. This is where the CAT arrives from the airport, making it a common first stop for visitors.
Wien Westbahnhof (Vienna West Station)
Wien Westbahnhof serves Westbahn trains (a private operator running to Salzburg and Linz) and some OBB regional services. All platforms are wheelchair accessible with elevators. The station connects to U-Bahn lines U3 and U6. The BahnhofCity Wien West shopping center above the station has barrier-free elevator access to all levels.
OBB Mobility Service
OBB (Oesterreichische Bundesbahnen / Austrian Federal Railways) provides a free mobility assistance service for passengers with disabilities. A trained employee will help you navigate the station, board the train using a portable ramp or lift, and exit at your destination.

Major Station Advantage
If you are traveling between major stations such as Wien Hauptbahnhof, Wien Meidling, Salzburg, or Linz, you only need to book 3 hours ahead. This gives much more flexibility for spontaneous travel.
Wheelchair Spaces on Trains
All OBB long-distance trains have designated wheelchair spaces in accessible carriages. The wheelchair space includes a flat area to park your wheelchair, securing straps, a companion seat, and an accessible toilet in the same car with grab bars, wide door, and enough turning space.
Train Types and Accessibility
| Train Type | Routes | Wheelchair Space | Boarding |

| Railjet | Vienna to Salzburg, Innsbruck, Graz, Budapest, Munich, Zurich | Yes, 2 spaces per train | Ramp assistance from OBB staff |
| Railjet xpress (new generation) | Replacing older Railjets on key routes from 2026 | Yes | Low-floor center sections for easier boarding |
| Cityjet (S-Bahn) | Vienna suburban and regional | Yes | Level boarding at most stations |
| REX (Regional Express) | Regional routes across Austria | Yes | Ramp assistance from OBB staff |

International Train Connections
Vienna is a major hub for international rail travel in Central Europe.
Bratislava (Slovakia)
Trains run roughly every hour between Wien Hauptbahnhof and Bratislava hlavna stanica. The journey takes about 1 hour. OBB Railjet and REX services both operate on this route. Book OBB mobility assistance at least 12 hours in advance (3 hours if departing from Wien Hauptbahnhof). Bratislava's main station has elevator access to platforms.
Budapest (Hungary)
OBB Railjet trains run from Wien Hauptbahnhof to Budapest Keleti every 1 to 2 hours. The journey takes about 2 hours 40 minutes. All Railjets have wheelchair spaces. Book OBB mobility assistance at least 24 to 48 hours in advance for international journeys. Budapest Keleti station has elevators but accessibility can be inconsistent. Consider contacting MAV (Hungarian railways) for assistance at the Budapest end.
Munich (Germany)
Railjet and ICE trains connect Wien Hauptbahnhof with Munich in about 4 hours. Wheelchair spaces are available on both services. For ICE trains, you can also contact Deutsche Bahn's mobility service at +49 30 65 21 28 88.
Prague (Czech Republic)
OBB and Czech Railways (CD) operate trains from Wien Hauptbahnhof to Prague in about 4 hours. Wheelchair spaces are available. Book assistance through OBB for the Austrian portion and through CD for the Czech portion.
International Assistance Coordination
For international journeys, OBB can coordinate assistance with the destination country's railway. However, the level of accessibility at foreign stations varies. Always confirm station accessibility at your destination separately, especially at older stations in Eastern Europe.
Buying Tickets
Online: Book through oebb.at or the OBB app (Scotty). Wheelchair spaces can be reserved during the booking process by selecting the accessibility option.
At the station: Ticket counters at Wien Hauptbahnhof are at wheelchair-accessible height. Ticket machines are also accessible with screens at seated height and contactless payment options.
Disability discounts: Passengers with an Austrian disability pass (Behindertenpass) with a "b" marking can bring a companion for free. International visitors with equivalent disability documentation should ask at the ticket counter about available discounts.
Tips for Train Travel
- Always confirm your wheelchair space reservation and meeting point when you arrive at the station. Go to the OBB information desk, not directly to the platform.
- Platform assignments can change. OBB staff will guide you to the correct platform and car.
- Power outlets are available at wheelchair spaces on Railjet trains. Austria uses standard European plugs (Type F, 230V, 50Hz).
- Food and drink are available from the on-board bistro car on Railjet trains, or at station shops before boarding.
- If traveling during peak hours (6:30 to 9:00 AM, 4:00 to 6:30 PM), trains can be busy. Your wheelchair space remains reserved, but navigating through the aisle to reach it can be tight.
Day Trips from Vienna
Bratislava (1 hour), Baden bei Wien (30 minutes), Krems an der Donau (1 hour), and Wiener Neustadt (40 minutes) are all easy day trips by train from Wien Hauptbahnhof. Book OBB mobility assistance for each leg of your journey separately.
